OK, here is an update. I downloaded the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft's website as the OneDrive link did not complete the download.
I executed the installation and it offered to install KB947821. It installed, I restarted the PC and the thrashing was almost gone, but after a second reboot it returned. It looks like something got changed or fixed in the interim after the installation, and then got broken again. I also think the hogging now last longer than before.

Please tell me if this is the file you intended me to download. If yes, where should I type the command you proposed and look for its log?
If not, let me know if I should remove this "hotfix".

    UserXP,

    Calm Down!

I don't know why the download didn't complete for you. It works for me EVERY TIME.
    Irregardless,

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) checks for missing/corrupt repair/replacment files/folder in the winsxs folder and reports them in the CheckSUR.log located in the CBS folder, which is temporary in that location.

What you did what fine, and correct. I try to provide automated tools that OP's can click to perform multiple specific tasks.

sfc /scannow cannot locate missing/corrupt replacement files/folder that are not available on your computer and it is not intelligent enough perform that task.

Please download CBS folder to Desktop
unzip/uncompress it and place on your desktop
Run SURT again, when it completes, run cbs folder to desktop
    Post CBS folder please

    Post CBS Folder please.

Oh, I am calmed down. I have lived with this issue for quite some time and will have patience to try and diagnose it.

Right, I tried your link for the second time and this time the file downloaded in a matter of seconds. The disk thrashing must have interfered with the download process on the first attempt.

I have attached the logs without the CAB files (there are 5 of those CAB files taking a total od 10Mb). If I should attach them separately, please let me know.
    Thanks for everything so far.

    Hi XPuser,

    Task scheduler is found here,

Control Panel >> Administration Tools >> Task Scheduler - then local

Looks like SURT repaired your USB3 drivers.

Well, at the moment, the thrashing is ongoing as I opened the Task Scheduler. It list 20 not expired tasks, none running. In the upper area of the window it says that during the 24 pas hours there were 0 tasks total, running, succeeded, or failed. Everything shows 0.

Those USB 3.0 drivers, whatever the problem, are obviously not the cause.

Download and run Autoruns. Go to File and save the ARN file. Zip it and upload here. What is the brand of hard drive you got?

I have a Western Digital 1Tb hard drive, model WD10EZEX (WD Caviar Blue). I have checked it with chkdsk, Western Digital's diagnostic software and Hard Disk Sentinel. None of them reported any errors. Plus, the drive functions normally once the thrashing completes, and runs normally in Safe Mode.

OK, here is the attached ARN log file.

Thank you all for taking the time to do this, I really appreciate it. I opened some of the logs myself and I haven't got the slightest clue as to what to look into. :-D

    Hi

looking at that Autoruns output it does NOT agree with the fact that Task scheduler local has no tasks in the last 24hrs.

It should have Adobe/Kapersky and a couple of others!!!!

would you mind running and posting the results
the BSOD analysis output -its got lots of other info
Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

    and
    Farbar (FRST) both logs
    Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

note based on the fact that Safe Mode works fine its pointing towards a Non MS application
