How to manually disable MSCONFIG setting? (no admin)

I was working with our IT department now that everything is locked down and no one has admin anymore. We were trying to diagnose a slow sign-in issue that's been plaguing some of the old Win7 machines. I suggested we try to use msconfig to do a diagnostic setup, so they entered their credentials (they're connected remotely with ConnectWise ScreenConnect program) and I turned on diagnostic mode and reset the computer.

There were no sign-in issues when switching users which was great, but now we are stuck in a difficult position. In the clean boot, the screenconnect service does not run, so now they cannot connect, which means they cannot open msconfig and restore msconfig to default boot behaviour.

It's a very easy fix if they had the computer but won't give me a password and want me to send the laptop back to head office for repairs. I wish not to do this, so I'm looking for some way to put msconfig back to default, or some way to boot windows into a mode that will load the services. If I can get the machine to boot with proper services even one time, then they can connect remotely again, go into msconfig and restore boot behaviour to default.

Alternately, if there is some way to reset msconfig to default, that would also be good.

I do not have administrator accesss any more and do not want to send the laptop away.

I have a Win10 boot disc and used it to get to a console. I am able to use bcdedit but there is no safeboot option in the bcd configuration. I am able to turn on legacy mode (F8 menu) and go into safe mode, which is a lot better than the diagnostic mode (at least i have full screen brightness on the laptop) but even if I say to use normal boot at F8 menu, msconfig settings are loaded after and the system still goes into diagnostic boot. So I essentially still have safe mode but I still can't run msconfig of course because my account isn't admin.

Is there anything I can do to disable msconfig settings from executing to allow a normal "default" boot? Maybe a config file I can manually edit, even if I had to do it with a linux jump drive to access it, I would be fine with that. I just need to force a normal boot one time so they can remotely connect again.

Please help!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately its against our rules to support hacking if the company have done this they must change it or we could be in trouble for by passing their system

You dont have admin credentials anymore, you've said so yourself. Therefore you should really pass the laptop to someone in company, in IT team.

Hi brainsoft,

Welcome to SevenForums!

You either need to get Admin rights re-instated or as iko22 said, give it to the Admin department to change!

I doubt the IT team need any support if they are worth their while!!!
If they do then they should't be part of the IT team!!!

The problem is that IT support relies on the ConnectWise ScreenConnect program to deliver its service, and the program has vulnerabilities in this kind of scenario. Maybe the company needs to review its Remote access program. The O.P. has not explained why he/she will not send laptop away - and that creates a problem for us on the Forum.
