    Free space usage Analyzer-- WizTree

After he cleans out some junk, why can't he just resize both partitions with a program like Easeus Partition Master?

Roughly 100gb c and remainder 400gb d -- good idea for the long run, right?

Yes, provided the D drive isn't full of movies, but if so, those can be moved to DVD's.

Krazybob--I have separate images for my C and my D. Makes it easier to find a single folder or piece of data that needs restoration. As for Carbonite, I don't believe in cloud backups. I have a redundant system of backups here.

But I have a problem. It is a Dell laptop and they only allocated 58 GB to the C drive and and 440 GB to the D drive.

YERCH! You should move everything OUT of the 2nd partition, then use AOMEI to repartition the C drive to the full 500 GB. Yecch! I just worked on a system that was JUST like this. I WIPED the 450gb partition, then extended the C drive to fill the whole drive.

However, to stop the slow crawl of disk usage on a System Drive, you will want to download AS Cleaner aka FreeSpaceCleaner:

    Alex Intelligent Software - Downloads

use the "with FF" option when you use it. This tool works for both SSDs and HDDs
