File Explorer search or drill down getting slower and slower

I set my indexing to index my data drive, which is on D:, from the top of My Documents. I stopped indexing my C: drive (O/S location), since comparatively this doesn't change that often. This worked for many years. But in recent months, searching on D: has gotten slower and slower. Should I re-enable indexing on the C: drive?

This doesn't just happen for searches, but when I'm drilling down with File Explorer from the My Documents root, there is at first a huge time lag. A lot of disk is being written or read. Once I get past the time lag, though, everything flows just fine. It's like it needs to load a map of My Documents or something!

    What could be wrong?

I'm going to re-enable indexing on C: just in case it's that simple.

    Thanks,

    Do a disk check
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk D: /f
