This may be totally unrelated, but for what it's worth, I once had extremely long shutdown times on windows 7. It turned out to be related to Microsoft.Net Framework updates. One I updated to the latest available one, the computer shutdown normally. A long shot perhaps, but who knows?

Michael,
The most recent .net framework installed was 4.8 v1, KB4532941, on 17 Jan 2020. There are 4 prior "versions" of this, installed dating back to 16 Aug 2019.

All,
I originally reported that the blue screen hangup on shutdown was variable, from normal to horribly long, and was shorter when the screen was connected by VGA, than when connected by HDMI.

Since on your advice I've tweaked the windows update check, and updated the Intel HD4400 graphics driver, the blue screen hangup for VGA seemed to be stable, mostly short but with long periods still there, I took the plunge and re-connected with HDMI. I reported the pleasing results of that. Since then (the last 4 days) I've noticed a pattern in the hangups, and there definitely seems to be a calendar date related frequency to them. The measuring period covered 2 weekdays and 2 weekend days. Specifically,
- the first shut down of a new day takes a long time: timed at over 3 minutes on 3 occasions, and just on 2 minutes on the 4th.
- for the remainder of each day (3 or 4 each day, spaced thru the day - morning, afternoon and evening), with 1 exception, shut-downs took 20-30 sec. The one exception was the last shut down last night (Saturday) when the last shut down of the day took 3 mins 15 sec.

Waiting on FM's reply to confirm I have the right for updating the registry re AutoEndTasks.

Update
I haven't heard further from F22, but on reviewing the link he provided (printed it out and read carefully - probable reaction to years of 'tread v carefully when doing anything in the registry' advice in forums like this - I took the plunge and applied Turn_On_AutoEndTasks_for_all_users.reg from that link.

So far, so good. One shut down and restart since doing that (but not the 1st of the day) and the blue screen time was 25sec.

At the end of the document about AutoEndTasks, there is a link to another one which discusses how to change the HungAppTimeout. Would that also be applicable in windows 7 and to this situation???

BSODs during long periods of activity, 4-5 hours.
I just started having bsods on a brand new harddrive (and 8 gb ram) that replaced a bad one. Recently, the bsods happen randomly after about 15-30 minutes of activity and have changed to just black screens, then restarting the boot process.

W7 system: suddenly long boots and periods of ultra slow performance
I have a W7 Professional system running an i7. It was working ok until yesterday. Started by noticing the sound system had stopped working. There was a red X through the speaker icon in the lower right corner. So I rebooted. It went into a chksdk mode (that made me nervous) and then booted but...

Frequent BSOD's after long periods of standby or sleep
Even since I purchased my laptop, I've been getting BSOD's when I go to "wake up" my laptop by either opening it or moving the mouse.
