Why is my computer taking so long to go into standby mode?

My Windows 7 machine has been working well for years, no complaints. When I will be away from it for a while, I push the standby button (on the keyboard) and it goes into standby mode. Typically, the amount of time from pressing the standby button to the computer’s being in standby mode is around five seconds.

Today, I built a portable Ubuntu system on a USB Drive, see Creating a Portable Linux Operating System on a USB Drive - CoastIPC. What I do not understand is this: With the computer’s running Windows 7 and with USB drive not in the computer, the time from pressing the standby button to the computer’s being in standby mode is around a full minute.

What on earth changed? More importantly, can I do anything to change it back?

What do you mean by standby: Sleep or hibernation?

After having done exactly nothing to the computer, by the fourth time I put it into standby mode, the time was back down to around five seconds. Odd.
