Win 7 64 RAM filling up. Memory leak outside windows?

I'm not sure if this is concrete or not, but what you're talking about is not a leak. If you shut down IE8 and the ram did not drop, you'd have an issue. At least you have a scapegoat, and you can just merrily install Firefox or Chrome...

What I'm referring to is when the ram is being subverted with nothing to blame. For example, even in this last instance, when dskchk was obviously the cause of the problem, the usage did not drop. Even after I canceled the dskchk, the ram was still full, and I had to completely log off explorer to empty it. That's just lame mate.

I was having the same problem with my win7 x64. I noticed that Internet Explorer was using 4gb of ram.. it would start around 200 MB and by the end of my day of surfing the net it would reach 4 gb.. so I just use Firefox instead and my computer runs much better.

Is My Ram FUBAR? Or Is IE8 FUBAR?

Yeah, that's a ton of usage by the explorer process (and it is committed, not just reserved). It'd be interesting to see a trace of explorer.exe at the time it looks like that (dumps over about a 30 minute period), although using DebugDiag on Win7 x64 is still hit or miss. If you could download/install it, create a memory/leak rule for explorer.exe, and take full dumps of that over about 30 minutes, that would be the best way to start.

Ok so I installed the x64 package, and the white paper assumes that I have a "rules" popup when I run it, but apparently this is not the case in win 7 (analysis only). I have no menu options for "rules" and all I can do is open an existing .dmp...

BTW, My latest observations - The mem leak seems to be mostly with chkdsk, and the slow system seems to be mostly only if the Search Indexer is running, however, with the gadget installed and I can supposedly start/stop on command, but it's very belligerent, and if I click the "stop" button, it says stopping for a second and then goes merrily back to indexing... the process behaves like a insolent child...

I'll get on it as soon as I return from the holidays... out of 10 dskchk iterations on 10 different 1.5 and 2tb drives, I only saw one or two that released the memory on completion.

By the way, my complaint with search index is absolutely not memory usage, but responsiveness. I build my indexes overnight, but during normal operation, if it's automatic, and I unzip something like a minecraft world backup (8-10,000 files) the indexer will kick in and grind the system to a halt.

I use windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. I have 16 GB RAM
It looks like my pc doesn't flush the ram, and I don't know how I can solve the problem.
After an hour my pc uses 15.8 GB RAM, even when I close all programs it still doesn't decrease. The weird thing is that it never reaches the 16 GB it always stops at 99 %.
Can anyone help me?

I had the same problem of memory being leaked on my Windows7 64b HP. Finally I've found the culprit: the Windows Media Center Receiver Service!!
You can try, open the Services window (Administrative Tools->Services) and look for it. Stop the service. You will see how the drained memory is coming back.
If it is the case, just disable the Service so next time you reboot it won't start automatically.
