    Backing up

With W7 backup, is it still necessary to use proprietory programmes such as Acronis?

Necessary? No, but I like and trust Acronis more than W7's backup utility. Many use it without a problem, but when it froze the third time that I tried to use it, I gave up on it. If you don't want to pay for Acronis, there is also Paragon, which has a free edition, and some use Macrium Reflect, which is also free.

I have used the built-in back with no problems, be sure you store your backup on a different hdd, then go to control panel, backup and restore, click on create an image, point it to ;your store point, and sit back till it's done. It will ask what you what you want to save, highlite C:/ os , when done it will ask you to make a boot disk, make one if you can or you can use your os disk if you have one, this is for restoring your image.

I use system image and store it on my HD. I use Paragon and keep it on an external hard drive. Double insurance and its all free.

    hi and welcome

most people use one or the other. You can just use the built in backup. You can use acronis. I happen to use both. I prefer ACronis

I find that all of the work...just a little differently and some with more bells and whistles depending upon your needs. But it's not that the Windows 7 backup is useless universally and is required to be changed.

For me, I just use robocopy and mirror my data onto a couple of external USB hard drives frequently. For me, that's really the only backup that matters..because it's my data.

I use a combination of Windows "system image" and Acronis True Image Home 2010 for making system images....which I only really use for testing and screwing around. I usually make 1 image right after patching the box and activating it and that is really the only image that I would ever restore. I really prefer to start clean and just add what I need over time...rather than restoring a box which is filled with a ton of applications and program entries which I may or may not use...but then have to go out and patch them all and get updates since many had likely changed after making the image.
