ATI 4800 Series Warning
Hey guys, Just thought I'd chime in and throw a thoughtful tip out there. If your thinking of purchasing any sort of ATI 4800 Series card, don't expect to over clock it. They seem to be what you see is what you get.
When and if you try, your computer will cease to function correctly until you restart in Safe mode and uninstall the program which you used to over clock it, or B start windows from the boot loader screen on hitting the INS key (this is not proven to work every time). Catalyst 9.2 has a nice over clocking program which comes with it in the catalyst control center (CCC), but the only remedy to this is when you over clock it too much, and it fails, on your next boot it will go back to the state at which the settings were set before. Hope this avoids some headaches in the future. |

My 4870 only runing at 850/1100 from 750/900 on a simple after market air cooler.
It's all about cooling, and luck of silicone. It works the same for all cards, if you go too far, you can lock up the PC. Although I have found with my Ati card, that VPU saves a lot of restarts. Normaly taking the memory too far out of spec, willl result is a lock up that VPU cannot recover from. But VPU works well with core overclocks and/or overheating. Good warning though, should go to Nvidia users too. If you do not know what you are doing , leave well alone. 4800 OC> http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=193707 Overdrive the overclocking feature you mention is in 9.2 CCC, has been aroud a while, 9700 was the first card to feature it IIRC in CCC 3.8. |

Im using a hd 4870 1GB and it doesn't need overclocking it flys at stock speed for me. I don't think there is a game out there that needs any more power, unless you want to run crysis at extreme settings with 8 x antialisaing but then the HD 4890 OC is out soon and is supposed to be a AA killer if you really want more power...
