I had no problems with my Windows 7 RC-1 tweak using Black Viper's tweaks (Windows 7 Service Configurations by Black Viper), and being even more liberal to disable a few he didn't mention that I know I don't want or need.

Yep...I use blackviper's suggestions for years. Currently use something between safe and tweaked and works very well.

Black Viper has worked for me also but be careful. You could make your system unbootable or perhaps hose cconnectivity. Before you disable a service look at the dependencies Windows reports.

As for a registry editor regedit works for me!

Black Viper's site is a great information source regarding services.

If a system is resource limited then tweaking the services can result in significant improvements. I have used it in the past on many XP and Vista systems.

However, it can be risky in that a service disabled today might be needed 3 months from now for a new application or OS function. At that time, the end user may have forgotten, or never knew, the consequences of disabling certain services. This can lead to confusion, i.e. "My ABC software won't install.....", etc.

So caution should be ********d and a record of which Black Viper suggestions were implemented for future reference should be kept.

If a system has sufficient resources any service tweaks may be an academic curiosity and not provide any real-world benefit while possibly creating numerous real-world headaches.

But if a few extra FPS in WOW or a few seconds difference in an image burn mean that much, go for it. Keep in mind it can be a double edged scalpel.

That took a minute to decipher. Chuckle.

Your point is quite valid. There are a couple of network related services that I do not run on most of my machines (XP). Took me a couple of days to figure out why I could not configure my network correctly when I started to play with HTPC and WiFi setups.

The really stupid part - I know the service tweaks serve no measurable/functional/experiential purpose. They are, by and large, residual settings in a large reg file merge that I apply when I install XP. I was in a short-lived "I want to be a gamer" phase when I learned how to slipstream custom XP builds.

Yes, you can merge a personailty trait into the registry.

Hmmm... I did not catch that. I was not trying to be mysterious. Pretty sure the phrase should have been "So caution should be ********d and a record..."

Very strange.....

And it did it again! Doublespace word is "e x e r c i s e d". Ok so what is wrong with "********"? I am beginning to hear voices perhaps I need an exorcism?

You can't type *** either. You know, where one might go to ********.

i tweak some services

I dont see why i should have services such as tablet pc,bluetooth, homegroup and especially superfetch (and others)as i don't use them and my hard drive activity has reduced alot(i never use search)as well as my memory.Surely it cant be that hard for the os to detect and disable services u don't need on install, there is plenty of software that does it
