You're confusing Superfetch with Indexing services. Superfetch (Windows Vista I/O technologies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) is actually used to speed-up application launch, along with other uses such as speeding up paging file usage. It's not nearly as evil as indexing and has nothing to do with searching files.
It's advised to leave Superfetch enabled, though certainly your PC will work fine with it disabled.
Could one of you make a list of random stuff we should turn off? I dont use a printer or anything like that.. This PC is for gaming only.
Thanx for that,I don't know what made me think it was to do with indexing,my mistake.Have turned back on to try.I thought i'd seen some bad press about it,but it was probably indexing,as u said.Saves me making a fool of myself in future.I do all my tweaks at once,so i notice an overall difference
There is one major problem with doing all the tweaks at the same time, any tweaks that make matters worse are not seen.
For example - you add 10 tweaks, 8 improve matters, 1 does nothing and one makes things worse - you would be better off only applying the 8 but will never know that.
Any changes to a system or possible fixes to issues should always be applied individually (and always perform a re-boot afterwords to make sure the system still works)
Well, OSes aren't mindreaders and cannot tell if you intend to need a service in the future.
Many services are not disabled but have a startup type of MANUAL. Open your Task Manager and click on the Services tab. Sort the services by the PID column. The services with no PID are NOT running and not directly consuming memory or cpu.
Again, if the desktop has sufficient resources, tweaking services from the Windows default may not provide any significant performance improvement and can cause user/support headaches.
If the need is justified, go for it! I firmly suggest you keep a record of any changes made for future reference when installing new programs or adding OS features. Thats's all.
