Windows 7: how to improve had disk windows score ?

08 Feb 2010   #11

Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

I was also thinking about increasing my HDD related performance somehow. I have a notebook, so I could only put one HDD in. I do not want to spend a fortune on a large SSD, so I do not have much choice. BTW: Would ReadyBoost with a large and fast SD-card increase the performance of my system? (Currently, I have 4 GB of RAM). Or was it possible to install Win7 onto an SD-card..?

You can use an adapter in a desktop PC to fit an SSD drive which is 2.5" into a 3.5" opening.

Personally, I just used Velcro on the back side of my SSD drive and velcroed it into an open area on my drive cage. Since there are no moving parts, it's safe to do this with an SSD drive.

I use an Intel X25-M Gen 2 80GB SSD for my OS and a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black for my storage drive. The performance on the Intel is great. My box boots faster, shuts down faster, loads games and apps almost instantly, and really reduces scan times for virus checkers and malware checkers.

Can someone explain why swapping my 640GB Western Digital AAKS for a 1TB WD Caviar Black FALS would drop my HD score from 7.7 to 5.9? And it's not even my boot/OS drive!
My boot drive is a 40GB Intel V-series G2 SSD that has the same amount of free space today when I redid WEI as it did when I first built the system and tested it a couple weeks ago and got the 7.7. The WD drive is just for storing data and software. I just copied the folders over from the 640GB to the 1TB drive. Everything's fine. Except for the WEI score.

Seems rather crazy for it to drop by 1.8, no? The new drive has more free space and I'm pretty sure the performance is similar if not nearly identical between the AAKS and the FALS. Also, doesn't WEI specifically test the drive where Windows 7 is installed? If so, I wonder what's changed/wrong with my SSD. I ran the Intel toolbox optimizer on it to make sure it's still optimized. It came back Green, meaning it optimized the SSD and it should be good to go.

Any ideas? :/

Can I physically reallocate pagefile on disk to improve performance
Hello, thanks for reading the topic. I've noticed that my page file , which is configured to 8gb, it's fragmented into 2 sectors of the HDD... That would not be bad, since I would believe the 4gb space for each fragment is not random... But, the thing is that both those fragments are located...

Does adding an SSD along side a hard disk improve performance?
I recently replaced a 7200 RPM laptop hard drive with an SSD and it improved over all performance quite a bit. I'm thinking now about installing an SSD on my desktop computer along side the 1tb hard disk - move the OS and programs to the SSD and use the hard drive just for data. Has anyone done...

Low WEI score due to primary disk, any help?
Hello all In running my test I get between 7.3 & 7.5 on all other stuff, but for my primary disk I get 5.9. My primary disk is (2) 10,000 Raptors running in RAID 0. I have defragmented it using O&O's complete performance method (got the same before this was even installed btw), it is only...

Disk score in Windows Experience Index
I am getting a 3.0 for this index. I have a RAID 1 (dual 320 GB 7200RPM 16MB cache Segate drive's) setup. I saw a post about disabling write-caching and re-running. When I do I get a score of 5.8. Is this a real score with it on? Write-cache is supposed to improve performance, why would it...
