Always run a chkdsk first!. Attempts to defrag a problematic disk will only make bad matters worse. Check with such people as GRC.com (Steve Gibson is the author of SPINRITE which is a marvelous disk checker/restorer/and more.)

If there is still doubt in your mind, then I recommend going to the websites of the various hard disk manufacturers.

Correct! Logic tells you that if there is a problem with the MFT or any FAT-related problems - a defrag may not even be ABLE to run to completion.

I met Steve Gibson years ago and while he may seem a little alarmist, he really knows what he is talking about. Spinrite is an excellent program and well worth the money.

As to which defragger to use - I have found Ultimate Defrag to be without peer. Best display of fragmentation status ever.

First run ChkDsk.exe. This is imperative.

Now let Defraggler run and do not interrupt - let it run to completion.

Personally, I use CONTIG.EXE in the SysInternalsSuite.
    That's my preference too.

    This sound crazy but I:

    Start > CMD > CD C:/ > Contig -v

    Enter,

    ????

    Profit.

    Takes forever (750 Gbs)

Do this weekly and I have a healthy baby PC :)

    Matt~
