    Free memory decreasing with time

    H

My thinkpad T500 has 3 GB memory installed and it has window 7 ultimate operating system,. When I start up the computer, it shows 1GB free memory and 200MB of standby memory. However, even the computer is sitting idle, the free memory decrease with time. The only software I have is MS office and McAfee. After 15 minutes, the free memory reduces to 200mb while the standby memory increases to 1GB. I took my thinkpad to the official dealer to have it check out. They find no problems. I scan for spyware etc and find none. I wonder whether there is anything wrong with my thinkpad.

    Thanks

I suspect you are talking about free memory and available memory. win 7 caches memory differently it puts most of the free memory into cache waiting for an app to request it. That speeds up load times and it is correct.

Have a look into resource manager > memory tab. That gives you the real story. Everything that is blue (light and dark) is available memory. The dark blue is cached processes but is available when needed. As long as the dark blue is not needed, the processes (or their roots) just sit there for fast launch in case you call them again. That's why you may have e.g. 3 iexplore.exe processes showing in the task manager > process tab.

If you really want to stop it, disable the Superfetch service.

If you had more details in your System specs, it would be easier for others to offer you a solution.:)
