If you have enabled "Clear Pagefile At Shutdown" it's going to take some time to erase everything in the paging file... depending on the size of the file it could take a LONG time. But it is better to do this than not. Page fragments inside the file can seriously slow system performance.

1) In your advanced system settings try making the minimum and maximum size of your pagefile the same... this will considerably reduce pagefile mantenance. Also keep your pagefile as small as you can... if you have gobs of RAM, you might even be able to disable the pagefile altogether.

2) From your other comments, having the pagefile on a different partition (drive letter) is only an advantage if it's on a different physical drive... i.e. Windows on drive 0, swapfile on drive 1. Doing this on one physical drive can backfire on you because it creates long seeks to access the pagefile, which can, again, seriously degrade system performance.

windows 7

Hi All

I was battling with this problem for 2 days solid and worked out the solution.

If you have done an upgrade from windows vista and the computer freezes when shutting down/logging off/restarting it is a problem with roaming profiles.

To repair this remove the computer from the domain and make it a workgruop computer. Restart wait for it to restart even if it takes long.

Your problem should then be resolved.

Try rejoin domain once all has been resolved and you are confident that it is shutting down properly.

Lately I've noticed that my custom-built PC has been taking roughly 5-10 minutes to shut down, and upon start-up it takes 5-10 minutes to get past the screen for my motherboard. With my specs, I didn't think I'd have this problem. I just did a virus scan with avast free antivirus and it turned up...
