I want to thank everyone for helping me out before I went insane.

Glad you got it working. I won't run real-time av stuff. It just interferes too much with the system. But we all have our own preferences. I use Malwarebytes all the time, but just for manual scans.

don't throw out the baby with the dirty bath water.

You need anti-virus protection, especially if you going to "torrent".

Use MalwareBytes AntiMalware for your monthly scan or to scan an external drive.

Use Microsoft Security Essentials for your real-time anti-virus protection.

Only use one anti-virus software and as I've indicated, Microsoft Security Essentials is definitely my preferred solution. It is free, non-obtrusive and works.

There's 2 ways I know av programs work.

1) they check for a signature. Meaning, some known virus is in the database.. meaning before it's "known" and in the database, it can infect your system.(postvention rather than prevention.)

2) it analyzes stuff, meaning it slows down and interferes with the normal processing of your machine.

Neither sounds very appealing to me.

Most of the stuff is going to come in through the browser or email or some file sharing app. Run them Sandboxed and you're at the locus of the problem without hosing your system.

Running the whole system in a wrapper is not that great. If you depend on a reboot to put the system back like it was before, well the real nasty viruses attack how your computer boots, so that makes that dubious. I think it better to run individual apps in a sandbox. Also have an image backup. If you get totally hosed, like something deleted your partition while you were running on it, boot the restore CD and restore from the image. Trying to classify bytes as good or bad while they are streaming in is a futile exercize. It's just a performance drain.
