Backing up windows 7 to a encrypted external drive

I regularly back up my files to a 2 TB external hard drive. Recently I've been backing up financial data to the drive and so decided to encrypt the drive.(its portable) Its not a big issue, it is just since I encrypted the drive I've had to rely on 3rd party automatic back up programs since windows stopped detecting the drive. Makes sense the drive is encrypted. Though even when the drive is mounted, everything else I use in windows can view and access the drive but windows 7's backup utility. Windows 7 backup utility can't find the drive when it "searches for drives" to backup to or create system images. Is there a way to make windows 7's backup utility able to access an encrypted drive? If not 3rd party programs I guess will be my new go to.

Make sure that the external drive is unlocked.
