Mganddrea, your 980 is going to need somewhere between 4.6 and 5.0 OC, for a 7.9, Good luck, ( I gave up) 2(580's in SLI), 3(X25M-G's in raid 0) Mushkin Redline at 1648 7,8,7, and a 980X at 4.3, can Peg 7.9 hard in all catagories, but Processor. Good luck, but that last .2 is not worth the cost. $1,000 for .1, and no promise that last .1 will come, be sataisfied with the 7.7, and put that $1000 in a savings account twords a X68 chipset motherboard.

    +1

Don't buy a new processor for a WEI score.
If you actually need it for some purpose then OK.

MS actually makes the 7.9 for the processor almost impossible to get, master marketing strategy.
They've (MS, Intel and lots of others) made millions from it.

On the other hand, if you have the extra cash and don't feel like donating to my favorite charity, then get one.

My previous build went south so I had to throw something together pretty fast. This is what I came up with - nothing overclocked.

My ram and hard drives make the 7.9. graphics 7.8 and strangely my 920 do stepping scores 7.7 if it's stock 2.6Ghz or 4.6Ghz oc
I thought overclocking by a further 2000Mhz would get higher scores but it was the same.
I bought the chip from eBay as a "cherry picked cpu capable of the highest overclocks possible" To be fair, i've had it at 4620 (21 x 220) I let prime run but stopped it fairly quickly as the cpu reached 82 and turned red in core temp. 4.4 runs ok with load temps around 78/79.
I bought 2 from overclockers and neither performed as good as this one.
By the way, I've posted a youtube video of my setup incase anyone wants to see it.

Well his is my WEI score. I just built my first computer after many of years buying one. I still have alot to learn. I spent most of the budget on the video card. Now I will get a SSD sometime next year.
