    Q9550 Question

ok so im on a tight buget and i have my q9550 qith stock(i know i have to upgrade) fan

this is my question does anybody know they layout of cores on the chip

im noticing the my core 2 is running about 3-5degrees cel. hotter then they other 3
    core 1 running 57
    core 2 running 61
    core 3 running 57
    core 4 running 57

is core 1 and 4 on the outside and 2 and 3 on the inside AKA 1234 left to right or did the do a core 1324 thing left to right

3-4 degrees is normal variation. The trend is the important thing with temps

You probably do need to invest in another cpu cooler. I have that CPU and at default clocking it runs 36-38 and when I have it overclocked to 3.8 they run 40-42.

I just always allow that the higher temps, while they may be in range, is bound to cause degrading over the course of a few years.

It is certainly normal for one core to run hotter than others (as it 'used' more frequently than others for Windows Services etc)

It's also worth noting that the Q9XX series had notoriously 'sticky/dud' idle core sensors that would get 'stuck' @ idle temps. By the end, only one of my Q9550 sensors actually moved when idle.

However it's the load temps that count.

If those idle temps are actually accurate, then it may be worthwhile double checking that all the push pins are firmly secure, because they look more like 'load temps' than idle temps.

Poor case airflow and high ambient temps don't help either.

At the very least as a 'cheap stop gap', remove the cooler, clean the thermal compound of and replace it with fresh compound.

Those temps are still 'safe', but are definitely edging on the 'high' side and I'd be wary of what the temps would reach under load.

Your chip won't 'fry' as it will thermally throttle / shutdown the PC before that occurs, but running at those temps 24/7 isn't good for the long term life of the chip.

If you haven't already, download RealTemp and run the sensor test to check if those core temps are sticky/stuck etc.
