Why does my pc turn itself on?

Every so often I get up in the morning to find the pc that I had put to sleep has woken up. There doesn't seem to be any extra processes running. Wake on lan is turned off. I recently started using Windows Media Centre but I don't have anything set to record or update. What could it be?

It is but this is only a recent phenomenon. And it was always my understanding that if the pc wasn't on at the specified update time it would just check for updates on next start up?

Turn it off temporarily and see if it fixes the problem

I don't think that is the problem as I've always had automatic updates switched on and this has only started happening recently and its only once every so often.

I found another thread here that shows I can use the powercfg lastwake command to find out what it was next time it happens.

Check the Start-up setting in the Bios.

Have any animals in the house? They could be walking over the keyboard or bumping the mouse.
Or maybe it is a mouse?

    Just a thought.

Might want to check other installed software,, something you installed recently maybe?
Run a malware/virus scan with Malwarebytes and some other scan?

Could be BIOS settings. Did you update your BIOS lately?

Possible power fluctuations? Maybe, just guessing. Do you have your system on a Battery Backup?

IF not using a Battery Backup, it could be the surge protector, or it is possible that it might be the power supply itself. These may not be the problem, but they are plausible.

There are 3 ways I can think of a PC turning on

    1. You physically press the power button on your casing which is connected to the power switch on your motherboard.

    2. The switch on some motherboards can be activated but just touching it with conductor or by a surge of current.

    3. You have set the BIOS to turn on your computer at a specific time. Considering your computer wakes up at a specific time (in the morning), this is probably the cause.

I used the powercfg lastwake command and found it was a Windows Media Centre updater. Why does my pc turn itself on?-capture.jpg

In the Task Scheduler it was ticked to wake copmuter to perform this task. Hopefully this should be problem solved/

I am personally having a similar problem. I have had Windows 7 installed for several months now, although this problem first appeared about a month ago. Now it occurs every night without fail around at about, say, 3 o'clock-ish AM. Even when I SHUT DOWN (or HIBERNATE, for that matter) my computer it will turn itself ON (unless I unplug the power and take the battery out, of course).

I ran through some of the steps in this thread and I unchecked the "wake the computer to perform this task" under WMC in Task Scheduler. Also, I'm pretty sure I've always had Windows Update set to automatically check for, download and install updates as they are available - but will this turn my laptop on to do this? I was unable to obtain more information when running the command "powercfg -lastwake" - but there is a history of "1" wake count, it reports. But again, will this not only apply to computers that have been put to SLEEP and not shut down???

I have been researching this issue of mine for several weeks now, have had a Dell tech come out and replace my motherboard along with memory cards, etc. but the problem still persists. The last thing they recommended is performing a clean install of 7 but I have not completed that as the installation sits at 64% for over an hour on the "installing windows files" step or whatever. I'm going to try turning off automatic updates for the first time ever and see what that does - this problem is really annoying and I seem to almost be at my wit's end. Sorry if my explanation seems scattered or nondescript. Could anyone provide any assistance?!? Thanks in advance!!
