    chkdsk will not run.......error 766f6c756d652e63 3f1


    Hi guys. I'm using a fairly new laptop, had it for less then a yr. It came w/ Vista and I never had to use Chkdsk on it. I used the Windows 7 upgrade disc about 3 weeks and upgraded to Win7 w/ no issues. Love it so far.

    Today my computer froze while shutting down. I had to hold the power button to turn it off. I then wanted to chkdsk, but it will not run suppostedly because "due to recent software installation" and it gives me error 766f6c756d652e63 3f1.

    Anyone experience this? Pls help.

    Uninstall the recent software that you installed.

    Can also try a system file check

    (type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow)

    Let us know the results

    Test the issue in SAFE MODE and CLEAN BOOT.

    If it works in both modes, the possible cause can be the software conflicts. If it only works in Safe Mode, the hardware drivers may be causing the issue.

    Thx Ken. I uninstalled a few recent installed programs (wasnt much to uninstall because i never had to run chkdsk before so I dont know how far to go back).

    Sfc/Scannow works and no errors popped up I ran the Memory Diagnostic as well and everything is fine.

    I then did chkdsk c: /f from command prompt after pressing f8 at startup>repair> command promt (sorry i forgot what the process is called). chkdsk worked there, but had errors in creating the log.

    I then tried command line chkdsk, but that didnt work either. Same error as GUI chkdsk. It only worked after pressing f8 at startup and running it from the "repair" command prompt.

    Thx Bill, gui or command line chkdsk doesn't work in Safe Mode or Clean boot.

    Also I tried my Win7 upgrade disk, but there isnt a repair option. i'm stumpped here.

    The last post in this thread describes a fix:

    chkdsk error (766f6c756d652e63 3f1) on windows 7 system reserved partition

    Rather cryptic but what he did was open Disk Management (Start, type disk man and press Enter) and assign a drive letter to the System Reserve partition. The rest is pretty clear.

    Thx, I have 2 partitions w/o drive letters. 1 is "Recovery Partition" and the other is "OEM Partition". Im assuming his system reserve is like my recovery partition.

    Im in Disk Management, but how do I assign the Recovery Partition a drive letter?

    No System Reserve is something Windows 7 install sets up some times, depends on how you do the install. The two you mentioned are different.

    The Recovery partition is probably where the recovery data is to put you computer back to it's factory new state.

    Not sure what the OEM partition is.

    Best not to muck with either of them.

    As for assigning a drive letter, you right click on the partition and select Change drive letter .... but, as I mentioned, you should not mess with either of them as that may affect your ability to restore your computer to it's factory installed state if that ever becomes necessary.

    In disk management you should see a partition named "System Reserved". It is 100 megabytes and by default has no drive letter assigned. Just right click on it and select "change drive letter and path". Then you can assign a letter.

Greetings. My system has 4 drives, 1 SSD and 3 HDDs. Windows 7 is installed on the SDD and one of the HDDs. I also have Windows XP installed on one of the HDDs. I cannot get Chkdsk to run on either of the Windows 7 installs with the error code shown. Chkdsk will run fine on the XP install...
