    Odd Task Scheduler Issues

Opening task scheduler gives me a pop up message:-

The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click refresh.

Click "OK" and the pop up repeats; click "OK" again and a new pop up message:-

Task Scheduler service is not available. Task Scheduler will attempt to reconnect to it.

Click "OK" and the original pop up appears again for the last time. A "Reading Data Failed remains in he Task status window.

All related services and dependencies seem to be running normally. No errors are apparent in the event logs.

Has anyone else come across such an issue?

    Cheers from Mike

I think the problem is that CCleaner deleted a file or files that are needed by taskscheduler. Perhaps other cleaners are also deleting files needed by TS.

I have the same issue, and I confess I have used CCleaner. Is there a way to fix this?

    Appreciate any help, thanks.

Is the task scheduler service running?

Start Menu, Run, services.msc, Task Schedule (automatic)

Yes it is running, as well as all dependencies or whatever they are called. Very odd issue.

CCleaner should not break it. I use CCleaner all the time and have a fine install. If you think that was the problem, make sure to backup your registry changes(cleaner) incase something happens.

As for the Task Scheduler problem, i am not really sure at the moment but I can look into it some more later.

Out of desperation, I tried the following process which fixed this issue for me:-

Use regedit and delete all entries under the following key:-

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache]

You may wish to backup/export that key before deleting.

Upon reboot, the task scheduler issues were resolved for me.

However, not all related issues were fixed. For instance, disabling or enabling system restore points (right-click "My Computer" - properties) resulted in this popup message:-

"Could not create the scheduled task for the following reason:
Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7)"

Hope this is of some help to resolve the issue - any comments would be most welcome.

    Cheers from Mike :)

Either you disabled something you weren't supposed to disable, or something went wrong.

Go here for a list of the serivces with their default settings.
