    excessive cpu usage

Roughly 1 hour after rebooting, with nothing running besides MSN, xfire, and mozilla, my CPU utilization goes to 78-90% with no let down. AMD Phenom X4 9550 w/ 6gb ram, nvidia 9500, install is 2 days old. This is very disappointing because it means that even youtube videos hitch, and games get 2fps. Sad to say I had better performance in xp sp2 on a 3.2ghz P4 w/ 2gb ram and an ATI x800xt. Not counting games even. Although sadly SWG get roughly the same or worse performance, which is likely split between equal perf being poor engine on SWG (SOE)'s part, and the 2fps on Win 7 (when I launch after having been up for 1 hour or more). I've shut down obviously non-essential services (anything HP installed, my media sharing services) and used msconfig to take out services that aren't MS provided. Even Vista provided better performance, although I still had hitching on youtube videos (i've got high speed cable 3whatever and get downloads at 500+k/sec). Any ideas? This is very disappointing. I would rather get the benefits of Win 7 but I'm at the point where I'll install XP on this new pc. And I'm leaving out UI problems I have w/ Win7. Any tips are appreciated. I've done malware scans as well and dont have a virus scan running realtime (unless it's built into Win7).
Thank you for reading this, and ty in advance for any suggestions.

Thank you for being helpful. I had less than 1gb of programs running in task manager. If you have an easy way to get a report of what is running in task manager, please make it a sticky. svchost had as much memory as firefox (w/ 8 tabs), but honestly, when I'm not moving the mouse, no new webpages are loading, no game is running, your suggestion seems less than helpful considering you suggested no way of providing that information. Tell me how to give you useful information besides the detailed post I put up and I'll be happy to provide. When sorted by CPU usage, idle had the large percentage but if you went to the perf tab of task manager, cpu was still 80+%. Is this the mod's idea of being helpful?

You may have the infected version of Windows 7 RC installed.

I downloaded RC 1 direct from MS, burned to DVD and installed on a fresh install of Vista (again, I just purchased this PC 4 days ago and didn't install anything besides Age of Conan, XFire, and Mozilla prior to the Win 7 upgrade). Would it help to post a dxdiag file? Are there other logs I can generate taht would be helpful?

I'll post a screenshot of task manager the next time it slows down. I just rebooted and it's late, so that may be tomorrow. Thank you for that suggestion.

Yeah - use the How to use the Snipping Tool in Vista - Vista Forums tutorial from the Vista forums to make screen shots and then post them using the bulletin board software that allows for file attachments....

And as for being helpful, you've not really told us much about the system, how it acted up, where you got the ISO from, what else you've installed, what *you* think is non-essential services, or what is eating your CPU up - if my utilization is 80% the first thing *I* to is open Task Manager ans see where that 80% is going....

Since you seem to know enough to disable non-essential services, I would assume you know enough to look in Task manager to see what is going on. I understand you're frustrated with a system that is not working correctly, but you've give us *nothing* to go on right now - and I shouldn't have to fish for obvious answers from someone as prolific as you are.

Nothing is taking 80% in task mgr besides idle. Non essential = HP's installed crap. My other posts indicate where I got the iso from and what is installed (aka 2 games, xfire, mozilla, and msn). I'm smart enough to look for something taking up a large % in task manager, but when only idle and svchost show anything above 10% and svchost doesnt tell you what it's hosting, I can't give you more. You're obviously more prolific than I am because a) you're mod here, and b (my guess) you've run vista for more than 24 hours. When the slowdown reoccurs (it's recurred 2x times after reboots, the initial time was after i left it up for >1 day w/ it sleeping once or twice), so I assume it'll reappear, I'll grab ss's of processes and performance tabs. I'll post more tomorrow, since either a)it won't slow down before I hit the hay (been up for 30 hours due to work) or b)it won't have reoccured and i'll still post ss's and say "i got nothing". I appreciate any suggestions people are willing to give, or links to sticky's I've missed. I avoided vista forums b/c this is win7 and I assumed with it being in beta and now RC1, there would be sticky's unique to it. If there are sticky's that are relevant to vista x64 and win 7 x64, please let me know where to look. Good night all.

*update a minute later* if anyone has other win 7 forums I can peruse for additional suggestions/tips/whatever, please let me know. this is the only one I've been made aware of.

i get the same problem now and again. usually it's Firefox, maybe there's a memory leak in one of your plugins, or something of that nature. my pc is old as dirt though, so I expect cretin things to happen like that.

So i scrapped a bunch of usless services, now its not so bad
5-20% cpu and ~500MB Memory load w/ Firefox, Nod32, and a couple other things
