    Mysterious registry entries

I was running my anti-spamware program (SUPERAntiSpyware) and it found several CSLID entries that referenced my removable storage (DVD drive). There is no disk in D: and the program wanted me to put the disk in for testing. In each case, the reference was to d:\launch.ocx.

When I have run the antispyware program in the past (2 weeks ago) it did not encounter the same problems.

There were also some other D:\ related entries but the were simple LastUsedSource type of lines.

My question - should there be active d:\launch.ocx entries attached to my CSLID keys.

Or should I backup and delete the entries?

    Thanks

Without seeing the entire registry key I can't give you a whole bunch of information. But after searching around launch.ocx could be a valid file.

It is also ossible that these are leftovers from executing autorun when inserting disks.

My thought is that if the file is actually loaded on the removable media, then you're not in much danger because the file is not there if the disk is not inthe drive.

I agree with SailingNut. I would not not be concerned about it.

This is what I found doing a search for OCX extensions:

Errors in your registry are one of the common causes for incorrect file associations on your windows system. It is highly recommended that you check your registry for file association errors (will also check for any other registry errors).

The OCX file type is primarily associated with 'Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) Control Extension' by Microsoft Corporation. ActiveX. Note: This file type can become infected and should be carefully scanned if someone sends you a file with this extension.

I am not a huge advocate of registry scanners but if you don't already have it I would download and run CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download using the registry part of it and see what results you get, you can always save the registry setting and revert back to them if it goes wrong somehow.

Yeah, those entries may have something to do with the default action you took when you first inserted a particular CD/DVD. It may be "remembering" the choice so it does it again when you reinsert that CD/DVD.

And in the case of the media with that particular file on it, that file could be used to launch a virus if there was a virus on the media and I guess the AV software wants to check it out so it can then mark it as no-threat and move on. Though without any more info on what CD it is talking about, I don;t know how you would know which of the 5 disks out of dozens or hundreds you have that are the ones it wants to look at :)

Thanks for all the replies. I will go with "don't worry".

I did download CCleaner and ran it - I like it. I have been using TweakNow Regcleaner and CCleaner works much better.

    Thanks to all.
