Windows back-up SW won't work

So, when I got windows 7, i realized that they do not send you a recovery disk, but that you have to burn your own. when i went into the back-up program to do so I got all the way to the part where you choose to burn to disk or back up on flash drive. These buttons are not highlighted. It will not let me choose to back up to disk. It was my understanding that this part of the program was free and that I should be able to create a back up/ recovery disk. is there something that i am doing wrong. I am using the W7 Premium edition.

thanks,
