Not 100% sure what caused the problem.

Things have stabilised since the chkdsk though.

Though looking through the event viewer I had 2 errors since but not bad...

Idiot me restarted (hard reset) the computer when it was stuck loading drivers - didn't realise it was running chkdsk in the background - when it rebooted it stopped at the same place...

Chkdsk /R did a restart - seemed to hang for a few minutes. Then restarted again to desktop. Then crash bsod again.
