Did you try flushing the dns cache and log off/log back on after editing the hosts file?

I've been searching but there seems to be conflicting info. One page claimed MS was bypassing the hosts...

I got it so the hosts file is no longer being replaced with another file! However the computer still does not use the hosts file as verified by a ping command. I used another laptop similar to mine...

You could set it up as a file server, with shares. That would be pretty easy and very good usefulness. You could install some big drives and make an automated backup machine.
