OK, if I'm not driving you crazy yet I've been googling furiously as you no longer seem to have a Java problem, but a Java control panel problem. Look in Program files, Java, jre6, bin

See if there is a javacpl.exe . If so, click on it and see if get same error. A Guy

Good, the key is there, but the control panel for Java isn't pointed there. See if you find the javacpl.exe in the programs file folder I mentioned, and see if clicking it works fine.

C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javacpl.exe

No, it's just an odd problem, and you are on XP and I can't look in my directories to see what you should see. It's possible there is the javacpl.exe in the program files folder, and there may be a javacpl.exe in Windows\System32 folder. Copying the one from program files to System32 could work, but I can't test it on my PC. If clicking the one in the program files folder works, it may be just an inconvenience you can live with. OR, someone else may jump in with an idea that works on XP. A Guy

Actually rather than run a search, I was suggesting you actually go to your program tiles folder and go to Java folder, inside you will find a jre folder, inside that will be a bin folder, inside that would be the javacpl.exe you can click on to see if Java Control Panel opens, or you get the error.

A Guy .. If you think my Java will run okay .. and it's ok that the Control Panel (JAVA )Icon won't open..
then I'll be okay with it all.

YOU have worked your heart out on this tonite.
Thanks so much more than you'll ever know.
I'm most greatful for your help.

If by chance , someone has the answer .. then that would be great as well.

Thanks so very much.
