This is where I an right now,, see Screenshot.
Good, the key is there, but the control panel for Java isn't pointed there. See if you find the javacpl.exe in the programs file folder I mentioned, and see if clicking it works fine.

    C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javacpl.exe

A Guy..... No you aren't driving me crazy..
I may well be the one driving YOU batty tonite.
No, it's just an odd problem, and you are on XP and I can't look in my directories to see what you should see. It's possible there is the javacpl.exe in the program files folder, and there may be a javacpl.exe in Windows\System32 folder. Copying the one from program files to System32 could work, but I can't test it on my PC. If clicking the one in the program files folder works, it may be just an inconvenience you can live with. OR, someone else may jump in with an idea that works on XP. A Guy
A Guy .. If you think my Java will run okay .. and it's ok that the Control Panel (JAVA )Icon won't open..
then I'll be okay with it all.

YOU have worked your heart out on this tonite.
Thanks so much more than you'll ever know.
I'm most greatful for your help.

If by chance , someone has the answer .. then that would be great as well.

    Thanks so very much.
OK M'Lady, but the javacpl.exe in the programs file opens the control panel for me, just something to try. Was my pleasure to assist you. I hope it was worthwhile. Take care, A Guy

I was trying to prepare for the New Java version.
I've always gone to my control panel.. hit Add/Remove let my programs load.. then un-install Jave before getting the newer version.. then reboot my pc..
I have done it as above.. It won't verify..
I went back to my control panel.. my Java Icon is there..

    Cannot open it..
I get a message .. " The System Cannot find the registery key specified " .....Now what ?

Thanks for helping me with this.

Java program is NOT showing in my programs ..Add/Remove .
There is no need to uninstall Java before updating.

    Go to A Guy's link.
How do I test whether Java is working on my computer?

    Try reinstalling Java from here.
