What is a good free program to check for stuff running in the backround?

For normal monitoring, use Task Manager>Processes>click CPU heading.

To troubleshoot irregular CPU usage where services responsible are hard to pinpoint, Process Explorer is probably best.

To avoid having unnecessary programs running uncheck everything in msconfig>Startup except AV and gadgets/stikynotes if u use em.

Run a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials with the WIndows Firewall.

Beleive it or not, I actually like the new Windows 7 waiting for background programs to close message. Unfotunately, it appears to have been replaced with the old XP style dialog box below it. Not quite sure, but I think applying a tweak in Ultimate Windows Tweaker may have caused this to start...
