File Association issue

I have issue where all the Icons on my desktop got changed some how and now they all reflect the Itunes logo. When I click on any Icon it launchs Itune/Ping program. The subscript on the icons was not changed (ie. MS Word 2010), but the Itune logo appears rather than the proper word Icon and when I click on it -- Itunes opens. I tried to rebuild the shortcuts on the desktop, but that did not work. Also, I tried to bebuild my Icon cache, but that did not work. I tried various ways to kill and restart explorer, but that did not work. I do not believe it is a virus or malware, but I could be wrong. I am currently running McAffee on the system

I see there may be some ways to redefine the file associations, but not sure it that will solve the problem. There are a few other things I can believe I can try based on details I have seen in the forum threads, but I wanted to see if anyone in the forum has experienced this specific problem with Windows 7.

All thoguhts about my issue and possible solutions are greatly appreciated.

Don

Hello Don, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are these all shortcuts (lnk files) that this is happening with? If so then you might download and merge the lnk (LNK) option in the tutorial below to see if it may help. It will restore the default settings and associations for shortcut files.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

Hope this helps,
Shawn

LNK / File Association problem resolved

Brink,

Thank you very much for your quick response to my post and providing me with the details on the programs that could re-establish my broken links in the Icons/default programs. It was a problem I had not experienced before and was uncertain how to resolve it until reading the Seven tutorials you suggested, and using your lnk association programs.

Many thanks

Don

FLV File Association
Since almost every board on the forum is geared for W7, I will ask my question here, even though it is somewhat out of place. I messed up the file association for .flv files XP x64 a while back, and now I can't remember what I did. When I went there a moment ago, it said that I had changed it to...

How do I change a file's file type (not only file association)?
I need to change a zip file to an epub file. I have heard this can be done, but when I add the .epub after the file name, I notice the file is still actually zip type file when I right click properties. This is causing a problem when I try to open it in in different ebook reader programs. I...

Cannot run/open .exe files (Association issue)
Hi all, I'm really at my wit's end with this current issue I'm having. I recently got some spyware "pw.exe" which posed as "Win 7 Internet Security". I do not recall what I did to get rid of this issue, but the rogue anti-virus software is no longer posting imaginary warning messages. Avast...
