issues with live mail and imap

i've been trying to solve this for a couple of weeks now without any success. i was looking for an alternative for thunderbird and i thought i should try live mail in my win7 laptop but i can't seem to be able to download anything at all from gmail. i also tried postbox thinking it was an issue with wlm but i wasn't able to connect with it either. this is in build 7077 x64.

i can connect and download my email just fine using my other laptop runing xp home (32bit) with both thunderbird and postbox so it seems the problem is related with my win7 setup somehow. i have already tried reinstalling and reconfiguring wlm several times but the result is prety much the same and i can't even download my imap folders. here is an example of the errors i get:

i get similar errors for all my folders just with different error IDs. so, any sugestions are greatly appreciated as this is driving me crazy already.

I googled that error code and ran accross this page. It might help. What is "Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"?.

Im running wlm ver 14.0.8 on 32 bit with no prob. There is a instruction page on gmail to help set up imap/smtp.

Hi Ken, i did find this page before but i didn't think it was relevant as i am not connected to the internet using the msn network and i should be able to use gmail's smtp server. i can't really test with msn's smtp server as i do not have a username and passord anyway. in some ocasions i get the same error description but with error id 0x800C006F but i still can't find any useful info about it.

the instruction page on gmail doesn't help much either. it just shows the correct settings and i checked several times to make sure i have everything setup correctly.

btw, i forgot to mention before that i am using wml 14.0.8064.0206 and that i have IE disabled from windows features. it shouldn't make any difference but maybe i should try to enable it again.

i just tried enabling internet explorer again but it didn't make any difference. I also tried foxmail mainly because it has an option to test the settings when creating a new account. the report shows that it can find the smtp server but it can't connect to it. the test continues trying to send a test email forever so i can't get results for the next of the tests, and still i can't download my emails so i am guessing it just can't connect to the imap server either.

i also tried installing foxmail on my other laptop using xp home (using the same internet connection, wireless network, and gmail account) again, everything works perfectly so this looks like an issue with my 7 setup and not related the imap/smtp client or server. i'm not even sure how to try and trace the problem anymore. some type of ssl or some authentication issue maybe? i would hate to have to reinstall windows without finding what the problem was in the first place.

my settings look exactly the same. i have tested my password and username from both the webmail and other programs on my xp machine and it works just fine. i have also tried port 587 for smtp instead of 465 but the situation is exactly the same. also tried imap.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com and moved the server timeouts bar to maximum but still...

i played around with other settings as well. clear text and secure authentication options, different outgoing mail server settings, dissabled avast, checked the firewall, i played around with some services that looked relevant, nothing seems to help. my event viewer is also clean.

i have two sticks of 2gb of ram each and i also tested with the laptop's original 2x1gb yesterday just to make sure there wasn't something wrong with my memory.

Do you have a firewall? Maybe its blocking either gmail, or the port. You could also do either a ping, or traceroute to gmail server. Since you have tried more than 1 email client Im thinking its something abt the system that giving you grief. Your using the same settings for the xp machine and the win 7 machine?

i can ping both servers without any loss or anything (below are the results from win7), and yes, i use the same settings for the xp machine, both laptops are in the same network, behind the same netgear router, and trying to access the same gmail account.

So its not connectivity. did you try deleting then recreating the account in WLM? make sure you backup b4 if you do. Sorry Im not being more helpful, but I will keep looking

thanks for taking the time to try anyway ken. i did recreate my account several times but maybe i will give it another go with a new instalation of wlm as well. maybe i will just install a newer version of 7 and see if it solves anything, but i just hate the fact that i can't even imagine what the problem is. i will report back if i find anything new anyway.
