problem with file extensions

I run an old dos program under ntvdm. If I sort 1 file then reload my program and sort another all is ok. If I try to sort 2 files the operating system does not give the second file the correct extension.
Eg. first file 1.idx is sorted using an internal temporary name of 1.0X but correctly renamed when written to 1.idx
Second file 2.idx is correctly written but has an extension of 2.0X not 2.idx
Any help greatly appreciated

file extensions
I changed folder options to view files extensions. I then tried to change the file extensions on a couple of files and every time I tried to change an extension to a different type (i.e. *.htlm to *.rar) the explorer window freezes and shows not responding. Has anyone else had this problem?
