starting yahoo messenger and gmail notifier Minimized

    Hello,

I use yahoo messenger and gmail notifier v1.0.20 in order to get mail alerts for my two mail accounts on yahoo & gmail.

I put them in the startup folder so they can start automatically at startup or when I logon , but everytime they startup they start up maximized, I would like them to start minimized in the tray.

I tried editing their shortcut propeties, and selected Run: As Minimized but didn't work. tried adding -minimized as the parameter, still didn't work.

any ideas how to get this to work?

    Automatic (Delayed Start)

I only use Gmail notifier and Trillian at work on XP. At home on Windows 7 RC-1, I don't use these. But may be this is worth a short if you really want to play around with it:

Try running them as services and set one or more of the services to "Automatic (Delayed Start)" in case they're clashing when trying to load.

To run them as services: how to create a service from an exe on windows xp 2000 nt : executable to daemon mode - Tech Observer: Linux And Open Source

To change them to automatic with delayed start, open up your services windows (from Administrator Tools), then change their startup type.

I don't know if that will help, but it's some troubleshooting that will help determine if having them start at the same time is the problem.

cipheronemo, thanks for trying but the link you gave me, I tried it but there was some
    issues:

the following command fails to run:

    Code:
    C:\> Instsrv.exe srvany c:\windows\system32\srvany.exe
I checked system32 directory and there is no srvany.exe file

also the following does not exist in the registery:
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\srvany
I suspect that guide does not apply for windows 7.

also, I don't think the problem is caused from the two programs starting at the same time, I think they are ignoring the option I give them to startup minimized from the shortcut tab in the properties, where I select Run Minimized.

This also happens to other applications as well, like firefox ( not that I want to start it in minized mode, just for testing ) I tried the option to set it to run In Minimized mode from shortcut tab in the properties, but it still starts maximized.

thanks for trying ciphernemo, but I think it's not the solution we are looking for.

akramh, sorry that didn't work for Windows 7. I'd Google it some more if I were you on how to create a service to launch the executable, but I'm having trouble finding Windows 7 specific help on it.

Alternatively, you could create a scheduled task to launch one of them to help test the problem of launching at the same time.

Also, I'd try right clicking on their executable files, selecting Properties, and changing some things in the compatibility tab. Try disabling Visual Themes and Desktop Composition for them to see if that helps.

I'll try to test this on my install tonight to see if it works or not.

    try this..

open the properties of the shortcuts of the two programs in the startup folder....
then change run box`s option to minimised..
    like this:

i am showing it to you by using picasa shortcut, you do it with the two programs shortcut and then apply and ok.

    i hope this will work..

thanks septprince, already tried that method before and for some strange reason it doesn't have any effect.. I wish they just had an option like Windows Live messenger to load quietly into the background..

That's what gmail notifier is supposed to do as well. I suppose it's worth a shot as a workaround if the minimize problem is still there.
