HP OfficeJet Scanner Software Won't Install

Windows 7, Build 7000, installed without a hitch, and detected all necessary drivers, including for my HP 5610 Officejet. I can print from it, and I can scan from it using Windows Fax and Scan--thus the drivers are obviously working OK.

When I try to install the Vista software from HP's disc, it fails after a couple of minutes (and after plugging in the USB cable, which it recognizes). This means I don't have the HP scanning software installed. Given Windows Fax and Scan, that wouldn't be a big deal, except HP's scanning software, unlike Windows Fax and Scan, allows you to save scans in .pdf format, which is really, really, useful (at least for me).

Anyone else with this problem--or, better yet, with a suggested fix!

Can you try to run it in vista compatibility mode?

I can't get the HP scanner software to install; thus, I haven't gotten to the stage where I can choose "compatability mode" to run it--unless, contrary to my understanding, I can use "compatability mode" during installation itself.

I tried installing from the HP CD using Vista compatability, but still get stuck at step 5/8, after "device detected." It sits there with the message "Wait for device setup to finish." After more than 10 minutes, I'll (finally) get a message "Device setup has failed to complete."

By downloading the files manually, I'm able to install on my desktop "hpqscnvw.exe", which will successfully start "hp scanning." But its save options are limites to "bmp", "tif" and "jpg", which fails to give me the save to "pdf" that I could gain in Vista-which is the file format I'm really looking for....

I don't know, maybe you can try and troubleshoot it from the action center. Other than that, maybe it just doesn't like 7.

Thanks, Airbot, for your help. While I can't get the scanner software to work (at least in the sense of allowing me to save to a .pdf file), this is a much smaller problem than HP's OfficeJet created in the move from XP to Vista (beta)--where the printer would only print at a snail's pace until HP finally got around writing Vista drivers.

I had hoped that Windows 7's use of Vista drivers (basically) would eliminate the problem--but while I don't seen to have driver problem, I can't get the HP scanning software to perform as it did in Vista. Oh, well--a minor problem and one that presumably will be fixed sooner or later.

In the meantime, with that sole exception, Windows 7 is working w/io a hitch. Again, thanks for your input!

yeah, i'm sure it'll be worked out at some time. Maybe you'll find a way to get it to work, if so, let us know. Glad I could give you a little input, not much help though.

To install sotware open HP cd/dvd find any files with setup in name only on first folder and under options set them to compatability - windows vista.
