How about bbflashback express. Its free and the quality is pretty good.
Webinaria is another good free solution.

I would suggest you at least try both of the above solutions before spending $300 on camtasia.

If you have a look at my tutorial, Windows Search - Configure and Use, I used Adobe Captivate for the Flash sequences.

Although I must point out that it crashed alot on me, even with the latest patches, and I'm not all too happy with the quality of the output in some places.

I too have been looking for alternatives...
That is pretty neat and the quality is very good. Too bad the program is not stable. I think it could be very useful for tutorials.

Not sure if you got what you wanted but ive used Camtasia Studio 6 & it is quite good. I used it for recording a web cam chat & then converted it to AVI. If you would like a copy then message me & ill help you out I also used it to record a friends desktop when he said he had intermittent flickering. Although it wasn't the free version.
I also use Debut Video Capture Software from NCH Software. Again it will record your desktop or Capture video from a webcam, network IP camera or video input device. The screen capture software records the entire screen, a single window or any selected portion. It does quite a lot of other things too. Ive got version 1.88. Which is the free unlicensed version. You can purchase the licence for it but it does what i want it to.
Video Capture Software. Video, Webcam or Screen Recorder
    Hope this helps
