    Free photo editing software.

    What do you guys recommend for a free photo editing software package. I dont need a power house package just something to enhance, crop and re-size photos.

    I am looking at PhotoScape. It gets good review.

    Thanks

    Photoscape is fine for what you want. It's a rather unusual package with some tools and options not normally found in such software, but it works fine.

    It is rather difficult to "place" photoscape in any "heirarchy" of image software, because it is so unusual.

    A lot of people like Picasa , also fine for what you want to do.

    This is pretty small, fast, powerful, and easy to use. It can do a lot more than you actually want, and also has a few interesting functions which you might like;

    Phoxo

    There are lots of "medium range" graphics/image packages freely available, and many have the same functions, so it comes down to what you like personally or which interface you prefer.

    GIMP might be a good option, maybe a bit more than your looking for .... it's pretty much like photoshop but it's free.

    Gimp is absolutely first class, and I use it myself a lot, but it is not suitable for a beginner or for just carrying out a few simple image functions. It is far too complex and has a very steep learning curve, both in setting it up on Windows to do what you want, and in actual usage.

    Here's a screenshot of my Gimp setup, I have purposely not resized the screen capture, as you need a good and reasonably sized monitor to use it properly, and preferably a good double monitor setup. This is running on a DELL Ultra Sharp 3011 and a Samsung Syncmaster T260 ;

    If you're using MS Office you already have a great, user-friendly photo editing app right on your system -
    MICROSOFT OFFICE PICTURE MANAGER

    To open the app, go to: Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Tools

    GIMP is just awful for beginners, it really is a steep and unhelpful slope !

    For Simple photo viewing, editing and making slideshows for free
    These are the best programs on the FREEWARE shelf - yup 100% FREE - no nags, no pop-ups, no pain.
    Trust me - I'm a senior IT tutor for NHS computer noobies.

    • FastStone Image viewer - yes it crops, adjusts, converts photo files etc and its really simple to use (unlike GIMP)

    www.faststone.org/

    • Irafan View, same same - slightly older style menu structure, but fast.

    www.irfanview.com/

    • If you want an easy program that creates an Album Store, then allows fast and simple editing, in perhaps the simplest way ever invented - making it easier to use than Photoshop Elements 9 or the other programs and also alows you to automatically upload to a free Web Album for FREE - thus letting your friends see the photos, or even uploading to Google Earth (location shots) then Picassa 3 is the mother of all.

    I use it and I'm a pro with my own copy of Photoshop CS4, which is sometimes too much effort to fire up for simple images and I'm on Google Earth, megawise!
    Picasa 3

    • If you want to get all clever with advanced software, that is as powerful as Photoshop, yet easier than GIMP (which is terrible) then its:

    Paint.Net - ooh - did I mention it really is FREEWARE? I did? Excellent.
    Paint.net

    Which one for noobs needing some hand holding?

    PICASA
    There you go - Simples!
