    Corrupted icons in Windows Explorer..

    Hi everyone

A most excellent forum and is helping me greatly, however..

I have a problem with a missing/corrupted icon in Windows Explorer..

Specifcally the icon for my HDD where Windows 7 is located will not change back to an HDD icon rather it shows as a generic icon see screen shot below

I have tried deleting the iconcache and rebuilding it but it does not now appear to be rebuilding as when I look for the regenerated cache it is not present. I have hidden folders and files set to be shown.

I have also tried using Stardock s/w to reinstate the icon with out success..

I really do not want to have to do a full rebuild as have only just finsihed the upgrade and associated reinstall of my apps and data..

Any help or guidance re this gratefully received !!

Tx for this post, however the issue seems to be that when I restart the OS it is not regenerating the iconcache file..

I again followed the advice on ehow and Windows says the file is not actuially present, so i cannot delete it !

    Hence the problem !

I am at my wits end trying to figure this one out. :)

Read post #4 and post #5 of the thread Help! - How do i restore default icons? .

Both the techniques will solve your problem, but #5 is easier option .

EDIT : I have posted the link under the assumption that more than one icons are corrupted. If the displayed icon is the only one showing crazy, you may try Drive Icon - Change .

    Best of luck !

One more thing .... Download and install IconViewer ; view C:\Windows\Syswow64\imageres.dll for icon #36

..... if it is present there, Icon Cache - Rebuild should work perfectly .

    Guys

THANKYOU !! It would appear that my autorun.inf file had been changed by Windows easy transfer, and was the root cause of my problem.

Deleted it and restarted m/c al is now as it should be.

Great forum tx to all who have helped me.

    Rgds
