Often Linux distros have a hardware compatibility list someplace on their web site. It makes life a lot easier if you pick the distro most compatible rather than shoehorning your machine into a distro. It just saves a lot of headaches.

As example back in Pentium III days I had a Gateway Pentium III machine. I had used Red Hat for awhile so I thought I'd put that on. I could get stuff to work but it was a fight. I found Mandrake 9.1 was designed for HP PCs, which had very similar hardware setup to Gateway. Stuff just went on and worked without hassle. Made it a lot more fun.

it's probably a good idea to ask more on a knoppix forum - they should know more about particulars.

if you want to try another linux distro, then ubuntu or linux mint (very similar) are very popular, and more likely to be compatible with a wider range of hardware.

Some freeware that shows your hardware details like SIW or LookInMyPC would make it easier. If you find all your major components in the compatibility list it eliminates the guessing. It can be frustrasting. I've had a scanner that lasts forever that came with XP drivers. In Linux the driver was always for the one from that brand that was just a bit more popular. I don't think anyone ever ported a driver for it.

That's how it goes sometimes.
