    Free Commander/Renaming

I've been using this file manager for quite a while, and never saw it act this way before. Last night, I was renaming and sorting some videos, and quite suddenly, the little window that normally opens for that purpose didn't. I found that sometimes when I clicked to close the program from the Taskbar, that the window would then open, instead of closing the file manager. other times, left clicking the Taskbar icon would cause it to open, and on a few occassions, it would open normally.

Restarting the file manager had no effect, so I was considering reinstalling it...and still may, but a little bit ago, something more happened that I found quite odd. When I selected rename from the context menu, it opened a large blue window that I have never seen before, which was apparently for renaming multiple files. I do not believe that this file manager has that ability, so it must be some kind of crossed wires with some other program. However, I have no idea of which, because the only multiple rename program that I have is the Bulk Rename Utility, and it doesn't look anything like the window that I saw.

I know that I should have examined it closer, but I was in the middle of my videos, and I closed it out of flustration before thinking about it, and now I have no idea of how to open it, for there is no option for that on context menu.

I really don't know what question to ask, because it makes no sense to me...does it to anyone else?

If you select multiple files and press F2 you will get the blue window with the multiple file renamer. It's a very handy version of multiple rename because it's inbetween Explorer and something very complicated like Bulk Rename Utility(which I also use.)

Don't know about the weird behavior except that if you are running it on 64 bit OS some folders that windows redirects are not directly accessible. The author is working on a 64 bit version.

Thanks for the tip about how to use the multiple rename function, I didn't know anything about that (how it popped up without me highlighting multiple files, or pressing F2, I have no idea). I suppose that it is possible that this problem has to do with some kind of quirk with x64, but I have never run into it before.

I use FreeCommander 2009.02b on both Vista64 and W7 32 bit. I haven't run into anything strange. Although it did take me awhile to figure out how the rename dialog worked. It's great for renaming files in a numbered series, that type of thing. Also good for chopping off extra extensions like if you have files named video01.srt.stripped etc..

There's a new XE version in the works, but not all the features are implemented. The XE should come in both 32 and 64 bit flavors.

Yes, I just installed XE, because I thought it a good time to try it out. Don't know what I think about it yet, but it seems that all of the basic functions work.

I don't know how all of them could be connected, but another problem started at exactly the same time as this one. When I moved the data cable to my UPS from the front USB to my hub, it kept kicking my mouse off line, and each time that I reseated it, it would only last a short time until it got kicked off again, until I moved the mouse to the front USB. I may move the UPS data cable to a rear slot later, but they are all full, and it would be a bit of a hassle to reroute everything. Do you suppose that mouse problem could have corrupted some thing in FC?

Seems unlikely unless you are running off a USB drive. I guess any binary can get corrupted. I must be a creature of habit because I'm sticking with the old FC at least until fully enabled 64 bit comes out. One thing I hate is redoing all the customizations, like external programs in toolbar etc..

I think that I'm easier to satisfy since I am not accustomed to using any thing more than the basic functions. I may go back to the old version...to early to tell.
