Windows 7: Java 6 Update 26 Won't Install

Yes, it looks like they have changed things around so that solution for an older version won't work. I looked at my machine and the only folder I have is jre6. I am wondering if jre1.5.0_06 is a leftover from a previous install that could be causing problems. I will look into it and let you know.

Yes indeed it is a very old version.

"As of December 2005 the latest version of Java from Sun was 1.5.0_06."

It should be

As of June 8, 2011 the latest version of Java is 1.6.0_26 (a.k.a Version 6 Update 26)
This release does fix security bugs.

Take another look around with Revo Uninstaller which "FredeGail" suggested earlier. For some reason this seems to be a leftover and could be causing your issue.

Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit.

I apologize for the confusion. Java 1.5.0_06 is not present on the computer that has the problem. It's present on an entirely different machine.

Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit.

Although I was never able to install a Java download (as above), I solved the problem by copying the entire Java folder from an XP machine (Program Files/Java) and pasting it into the Win7 machine (Program Files).

Totally Solved (Perfectly) - Hooray!!

Finally figured out stackz's solution with the following help from TerryWood (just change references to Version 6 Update 23 to Version 6 Update 26).

"I am indebted to stackz for this. However as I am a novice getting it installed was not without its tribulations.

So for the benefit of others like me I would like to clarify the stackz method:

My machine that would not accept the Java 6 23 update is a Windows 7 PC.

On another machine you have to download the OFFLINE installer (even if the latest Java update is currently installed) on mine Win XP is installed fully up to date.

When you have downloaded the Java 6_23 exe click on it and then click on run, NOTHING MORE.

Go then to, in my case for win XP, Docs & Settings\User Name\ Application Data\Sun\ JRE1.6.0.23

Open this folder confirm that JRE.msi and Datacab1 are in there, then copy this folder to your flash drive.

Put the flash drive in the PC that you want install Java 6_23.

Then install from the flash drive by clicking on the .msi installer. Bingo it works, thanks to stackz."

Many thanks to Commodore Pet and FredeGail.

Win 7 64 bit
A different and easier way...

Look I had all these problems. Couldn't get java to uninstall correctly. Something was corrupted. Then newer versions wouldn't install. The installer kept crashing with fatal errors which nobody had a real answer for. Neither microsoft nor sun support forums could give any answers about the error code. I tried uninstall/install in safe mode, I tried online and offline installers, I tried searching for registry references and any folders related to java and removing them manually...I tried some of the fixes here, and some of them seem a bit too much. I had been dealing with this crap for months, not having java running properly on my machine.

I finally found the solution and got it working again today. It was suggested I try msicuu2, the old microsoft uninstaller cleanup utility. It's not longer supported on the MS website and the newer tool "Fix It" installer/uninstaller said it couldn't find any problem. I FINALLY found the solution that worked when I found mention of a program on a different forum, and that program was JavaRa.

JavaRa | SingularLabs

Downloaded in a jiffy, I ran it, and before I even had a chance to grab something to drink, it was done doing it's thing. I immediately went back to my desktop and tried the java runtime environment 7 update again, and where it had always failed before, it installed successfully this time! I then went directly to Suns webpage to test the java install and verified it now works.

How do I test whether Java is working on my computer?

In my case this seemed much simpler than transferring files to a flash drive, etc. etc. It just works now and I'm happy.

Hope this helps someone else keep their hair in their head!
