Unnecessary software on laptop

Hi, just got a new laptop, which of these software is unnecessary and that I can uninstall?

Im thinking of uninstalling:
braodcom 2070 bluetooth 3.0 (i dont need bluetooth, so it is okay for me to uninstall it? will it affect my wireless?)
HP setup (what does this do?)
Java(TM) 6 Update 24 (what does this do?)
Java(TM) 6 Update 24 (64-bit) (what does this do?)
microsoft silverlight (what does this do?)
Hp On Screen Display (what does this do?)
Hp Power manager (what does this do?)
Hp quick launch (what does this do?)

First job to do is make your Recovery Disks.

DON'T Format your PC !!! That is Very BAD advice !

DO Make the backups as suggested by theog. Keep these in a Very safe place because once you make them, you cannot make another copy unless you just do a disk to disk clone for your backup dvd's. These will be your MASTER Factory Install DVD's.

If you format the drive without making the backups you won't have any way to restore your system because Compaq/HP does not provide a windows 7 DVD or a copy of the OS on any DVD. You have to make your own copy of the system so you will have a backup for restore, HP does Not provide one. I suppose fakts did not know this? Gawd I hope you did not format that drive.. if you did, your system is Kaput and the store may not take it back.

fakts was assuming you had another windows 7 dvd to reinstall with. Even if you had another copy of windows on dvd, this will do you no good as the copy of windows that comes with the laptop is new, has a new product key and a fresh warranty. That's the copy you want to use in the laptop.

Even if you restore from the backups you make they too will be factory backups and all that stuff will get installed again anyway.

The best way to proceed is to make the Master backups, then delete the programs you do not need. After those are gone and you customise the OS with some default programs of you choice, you should make another backup of the system using the imaging service in windows backup or other such app like Macrium Reflect. This will make a copy of your windows with all of your changes and added programs intact so you can restore the entire system without having to reinstall your favorite apps. Therefore the first backup you made will be your MASTER and your second image type copy you make will be your Working Version for restore..

Let me know if your still around (If your PC didn't get toasted by bad advice) and I will walk you through all of these things. In general I like to keep a few of the HP apps because they can be very useful. I do get rid of some of them but not all of them are bad and certainly not bad enough to warrant formatting your hard drive.

In short you can keep: Bluetooth ( cus you never know and it doesn't take up a lot of space to worry about) Toss HP Setup because you have already used it at startup - Unless you did not register the PC at startup. You may want to keep this and run it to register your product, then after it's registered you can toss it. Keep all java, this is to update java that your browser uses. Toss silverlight, it's just a video player and only plays special Microsoft streams. If you need it in the future you can always redownload it.

You might want to keep the onscreen display: "This package provides the HP On-Screen Display Utility for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The HP On-Screen Display Utility enables the pop-up graphic displays that are shown on the screen when certain characteristics, such as volume or brightness, are changed."

You should not need Hp Power manager but you can google it. Some people have issues with the pc when this is removed.

HP Quick launch - those are the little multimedia icons you see on the keyboard keys for quick access, If you dont use those keyboard shortcuts, you can delete it.

Uninstall these things before making your 2nd Image type restore dvd's. If your still around I will look through your installed programs list and suggest other bloatware that's safe to remove. then you can add apps like Firefox etc and make your Image backup.
