Quicken and Windows 7-64bit- Printing Checks

I just upgraded to a Windows 7 64bit and also encountered a problem printing with Quicken. Unlike many of you I had no problem installing quicken but I didn't use a CD I used a downloaded exe file.

And even though you are logged in as the account administrator you still need to right click the setup exe file and select "run as administrator" and the installation will begin. Installing it without this step may cause some files not to install properly. Be sure to accept any updates from Quicken during installation.

My HP 6210 all in one printer is not really compatible with 64bit and HP doesn't provide any drivers for it but it works fine in all Office 7 apps. As expected the problem came when I tried to print in Quicken.

At first all of my print jobs got stuck in the print que and I couldn't cancel them. Once I was able to clear the print que I just kept playing with printing in Quicken until I stumbled upon the following work around:

In the printer setup for checks ( I use voucher checks with just 1 check and two memos)

1. select continuous
2. bypass driver
3. NO print preview ( an option with my HP printer)
4. make certain print spooler is set to automatic (under administrative services)

The first check I tried to print hesitated as though the printer locked up and didn't show up in the print que. So I decided to reprint the check and the moment the print check dialogue box opened it released the printer and all of my checks printed perfectly.

So if the steps listed above don't work try reopening the print dialogue and it should be fine.

It's definitely an extra step but it works. Ironically, I have no problem printing in Quickbooks and it's the same development team.

As for restoring Quicken files, the easiest way is to select restore backup file, select browse and find the backup file from "my docs" and it should work. Quicken does not like backup files on flash drives or cd's even though they offer it as an option. It works best when your file resides on your local hard drive.

I have been using Quicken for a number of years. A couple of years ago I switched to Windows XP - 64 bit and presto NO printing within Quicken! What a PAIN!!

I have since been using a Dual boot system - Windows 7 - 64 bit and Win XP - 32 bit.

When I want to use Quicken and print I have to start Win XP 32 bit.

Maybe it's me but you'd think that by now it would be fixed.

I am using an HP printer and yes I know you can print using a PDF file vhowever I have never been able to get that to work.

Has anyone been able to print Quicken via a 64 Bit system?

I have Quicken Home and Business but have not installed it yet, I've just been

reading other people's post about not beng able to print.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, Quicken, and an HP printer, and have the same issue with the print job getting stuck in the spooler. The printer has since broken, so now I intend to buy a new one, but I have since noticed that HP has provided updated Windows 7 64 bit drivers for the printer.
1. Should I buy the same printer or try a different brand?
2. Has anyone had the same problem after installing the updated drivers from HP?

In my original post on this I thought with a little tweaking I could get Quicken to work but that fantasy was short lived. I've resigned myself to printing to Quicken PDF and then print from the PDF. I can't even get Adobe Acrobat to work since the type doesn't line up properly.

I'm not convinced this is an HP issue. I had several Epson's and always had a problem with Quicken. When I switched to HP the problem with Quicken persisted and I was running Windows XP and then Vista 32. I have always had to find a work around to print in Quicken but eventually it would work. But I'm not so sure this time.

If you look at Quicken's support pages you'll find a long list of printing issues dating back years and most of the issues are unrelated to a specific printer.

The problem is simply Quicken - they know they have issues but simply don't care. Following is a quote from Walt Mossberg of WSJ:

"I have had the gradual feeling for a couple of years that Intuit's had more and more problems in Quicken ... and were less responsive to dealing with them"

So Mossberg switched to MS Money which is exactly what I plan to do.

I tried installing it but the kept looking for an .ini file and this is an .exe app file so it didn't work for me. Hope you have better luck!

MS Money has been discontinued. Guess you will have to find another product. and once again...My Epson CX9400fax works perfectly with Win7 x64 and Quicken 2008 (This includes printing...I checked).[/QUOTE]

As for switching to Epson I used them for years but they truly are the poster child for "disposable appliances". I never had one that lasted more than a year and they were always undependable. My HP works great for every other application and since Quicken represents such a minuscule portion of my print usage I'll stick with HP.

By the way, I tried running Quicken in both XP and Vista compatibility mode and it was actually worse - wouldn't even accept printing to Quicken PDF.

Just downloaded my free copy of Quicken Starter 2010 and installed it. I am using Windows Home Premium 64 bit and HP Photosmart D7460 printer. No problems installing and no problems printing checks. Couple of days ago I tried my last version of Qucken (2003) and it installed but would not print. Saw the printer but had something like NUL (or something like that after the printer name). I think that it was going to a print spooler (maybe). Maybe see if Quicken 2010 has a trial version and see if you are able to print.
Currently using Money Plus Deluxe, even if its not supported, it will probably last quite a few years. I don't upgrade very often, am still using a address program for Windows 95 that works on this system.

I exchanged my HP printer for an Epson WorkForce 610 and now Quicken prints fine with Windows 7 x64.

The problem that occurs with HP printers is a relatively easy workaround. Add HP Deskjet 990c printer on LPT1:, name it "Quicken HP Deskjet 990c". Once added, go back into Printer Properties and change the printer port checkbox to that of the HP printer you actually want to print on. Set your Quicken printer preference to the "QUicken HP 990c" and voila you will be able to print.

This happened in Vista Business and then I lost the printer profile when I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional so i had to do it again.

Kind of sucks because if you use online banking with Quicken the banks only support through something like Quicken 2005. A catch-22, no?
