What do you mean "redirect the 990c to your regular printer"?
What do you mean "redirect the 990c to your regular printer"?
Like all of you, I could not print with my newly installed Windows 7 x64 and HP printer. However, I stumbled upon something that worked!
Here is what did not work:
Upgrade from 2007 to 2010 (supposedly, 2010 is Windows 7 ready - not the case)
Here is what worked:
Taking a queue from barney rubble:
1. went to printer settings for checks
2. checked 'continuous'
3. checked 'bypass drivers'
4. ran a series of checks (found that continuous is only good for printing voucher checks, since it prints one check per page). checks printed just fine, which was inspiring. however, no value with non-voucher checks.
5. went back to check print settings and unchecked 'continuous'.
6. checks print perfectly now.
Something about getting that first connection to the printer and off we go...
can't explain it.
hope this is helpful.

I'm delighted that I was able to head you in the right direction. Ironically, the tips that helped you no longer work for me. It just stopped working one day. My remedy was to print to Quicken PDF (Acrobat doesn't work either) then print the checks from PDF. But even that isn't an acceptable option since the PDF alignment is off just enough to obscure the dollar amount.
I've tried every suggestion listed here (from installing a virtual printer to buying another printer) plus some others offered by HP's tech support but none of these worked. I even tried converting Quicken files to QuickBooks but that didn't work either.
I've spent so much time trying to get this program to work properly I would call it my new hobby except the very definition of hobby implies enjoyment.
I've finally decided to replace Quicken with another personal finance software that works out of the box. After trying several other programs I think I've settled on Money Dance. It lacks the aesthetics of Quicken but it's serviceable and works.
My review of alternate software has made me understand why Quicken dominates it's category. But therein lies the problem. There isn't another product that truly challenge Quicken's market share so they have no incentive to improve their bloated product and their incredibly poor tech support.
The solution proposed by jhollywd really works! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This was a really irritating glitch.
The instructions provided by jhollywd (but with additional detail) are as follows:
1) Add HP Deskjet 990c printer on LPT1 - Go to "Start", then "Devices and Printers" then Add a printer. Click on "Add a local printer" and select to use existing port LPT1. Click Next. Select HP in the left column. Select the HP Deskjet 990c. If you don't see it at first, continue to scroll down. Hp "Deskjet" printers are further down. Ignore the "HP Printers" listed at the beginning.
2) Name the new printer "Quicken HP Deskjet 990c" or whatever else you want to in order to identify it as the one you will use in quicken.
3) Once added, right click the new printer and open "Printer Properties". This is not the same as "Properties". Choose "Printer Properties".
4) Click on the "Ports" Tab. Change the printer port checkbox to that of the HP printer you actually want to print on. Scroll down if you don't see it at first.
5) Open Quicken and set your Quicken printer preference to the "QUicken HP 990c" and voila you will be able to print.
Note that the new Quicken Printer that you set up will not be visable in the printers list after you close the Devices and Printers window, but Quicken will continue to print to the actual HP printer.
Again, thanks go out to jhollywd.
Anyone tried Quicken 2010? Now that I have 2007 working, I'm afraid to switch. However, i'm told there's about a month left to use online banking... Anyone have any ionfor on the changes?
i went to 2010 because; 1. my printer wouldn't work w/ 2007 and 2. Quicken explicitly states support for Windows 7 on Quicken 2010. Paid ~$50US on amazon for 2010 premium and installed. Printer didn't work ...
Did the crazy process noted above and am now printing checks without a 'logical' reason for working.
haven't heard anything about the online banking... what do you mean? mine works fine.
cheers.

As anyone who has followed this knows, I've tried everything including adding the 990C. And it never worked because HP Deskjet 990C never showed up as an option on the list of HP printers.
If this has happened to you simply run a Windows Update which is on the bottom right hand side of the page where you need to select the printer model #.
After completing the update then follow the directions provided by JGrayCPA1 and it's a breeze.
Two final observations:
1: When the 990C is initially installed it will try to print a "test page". The printer will freeze just like it's been doing in Quicken. Just ignore that.
2: The 990C installed as my default printer and my actual printer (HP 6210) has been replaced by the 990C (the 6210 no longer appears in my list of devices). It doesn't really matter since all of my printing preferences remain the same and I can print in every program.
Many thanks to all who contributed to the 990C fix.
The reviews regarding Quicken 2010 are filled with horror stories. I will wait as long as I can before upgrading. I have not seen anything about not being able to use online banking after the next month if we don't upgrade. Does anyone have more details about this? Is it true?
From what I understand, if you have Quicken 2007 or before, Quicken will drop support for online banking in April. You have to upgrade before that. I have also seen terrible reviews of 2010 so I am in the market for Quicken 2009. I figure that gives me a couple more years and other versions of Quicken will come out. The price of Quicken 09 on eBay has actually gone up in the last month probably due to a higher demand because the word is out the Quicken 2010 has many detractors.
I just wanted to chime in with the same problem. I have been working with HP and Quicken. Both are about as useless as can be.....especially for an old fart like me that can barely understand computereze. It seems to me that Quicken blames Windows and HP, HP blames Quicken. I have quicken 2007. Everything works fine with the 64 bit Windows 7 except when in comes down to printing checks and reports. I have been working with both companies for over a week and have downloaded, uninstalled, downloaded, unistalled, etc, etc every driver they have suggested. Everything was fine until HP came out with the "Full Featured" driver for the J3680. Up until then I was using an interim driver from HP and the driver for the D2400 printer. When they came out with the full featured driver for my printer, everything went south.
I have given up with both companies. I am using a work around suggested by Quicken. I use the Quicken PDF printer, save the check or report to my desktop and print from there using the actual HP J3680 printer.
