If you really want to "Isolate" programs etc - your best bet is to run them in a Virtual Machine.
I have a feeling that programs like "Sandboxie" are not a good idea as they will obviously contain serious links into the OS kernels.
The advantage of a Virtual Machine is that is essentially a TOTALLY SEPARATE machine which can't "Break" the Host OS. Other advantages that you don't need admin privileges to run progams like vmware / virtual box nor need these privileges to install and maintain guest VM's.
The only limitation on VM's is that they don't (yet) support 3D graphics and such things like video streaming so things like DVD playing / TV watching / serious gaming probably won't work but nearly everything else works fine including Audio streaming.
Just my opinion however.

thanks for your input jimbo. you're right in one sense, but in the end, it depends on what a users needs isolation for.
me, i just use it to test-install apps so i can see what the installer wants to write where, and to watch the registry activity of installers. i prefer to use stand-alone apps so i can keep everything on a non-system partition. that way, when i reinstall windows, i don't have to reinstall all my apps as well.
usually i can unpack installers and check things out manually, but when that fails, sandboxie comes in very handy.

I have to agree with garbanzo. If I just want to surf super-isolated so I can't do nuthin' to nuthin', I can boot a Live Linux CD that uses a ram disk and the HD isn't even mounted. Sandboxie gives good protection while allowing you to do stuff, like download freeware... which takes up a lot of my surfing. I think it's much better than running a resident av that tends to gum up the whole system when all you really want is some protection around the browser(e.g. not allow some BHO to get up to something not nice.)
edit: I'm sure there are many who like the virtual box type of set up. I've tried it a few times but to me it's too involved for what it seems to offer. Sandboxie you run and installer and reboot, then set a couple of options. Plus to run normally all I have to do is close the sandbox and stop the Sandboxie Service. No reboot required. A matter of preference.
edit2: the main drawback to Sandboxie is MS killed the 64 bit implementation. I see nothing similar that's as easy to use for 64 bit. A real bummer.
