What is Java and why do I need it?What is Java technology and why do I need it?
Java is a programming language and computing platform first released by Sun Microsystems in 1995. It is the underlying technology that powers state-of-the-art programs including utilities, games, and business applications. Java runs on more than 850 million personal computers worldwide, and on billions of devices worldwide, including mobile and TV devices.
Why do I need Java?
There are lots of applications and websites that won't work unless you have Java installed, and more are created every day. Java is fast, secure, and reliable. From laptops to datacenters, game consoles to scientific supercomputers, cell phones to the Internet, Java is everywhere!
Install Java in Internet Explorer
Java is a technology used to create interactive or animated web content, such as games or advanced financial applications. Java programs are downloaded automatically to your computer when you use them and don't usually require special installation. To run Java programs in Internet Explorer, however, you must install special Java software. When you install Java, it is enabled by default and configured with safety settings at their highest level.
Are Java and QuickTime really necessary? | Technology | guardian.co.uk
Java is used for developing small applets and online apps (including games), and again, if you don't need to use any, you can uninstall it. Unfortunately there's no simple way to find out, except to remove it and see which website features stop working.
I have been using this PC I built/plugged the hardware components together and still have not installed Java.
I have run into sites that use Java but decided I don't need to use those sites.
Java has too many security issues that I have no intention to deal with.
So you may as I do occasionally find a site that uses Java but you can do as I and skip that site for ones that don't need Java.
Don't have it, don't need it nor want it.
My 2 cents.
Mike
I support all that has been said above.
Java is not used here on any of the Laptops running Vista or Windows 7.
CSIS: This is how Windows get infected with malware
When a Microsoft Windows machine gets infected by viruses/malware it does so mainly because users forget to update the Java JRE, Adobe Reader/Acrobat and Adobe Flash. This is revealed by a survey conducted by CSIS Security Group A/S.
Most vulnerable programs
On the basis of the total statistical data of this study it is documented that following products frequently are abused by malware in order to infect Windows machines: Java JRE, Adobe Reader / Acrobat, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Internet Explorer. A more detailed summary is given below:
This is why I don't use Java or Adobe Reader. Now if I could do without Flash but not there yet.

No, Java is not necessary to run Windows and enjoy the net. Some online scanners and speed tests use Java but others don't. When I really want to see something of interest, I put it on then remove it. Their always running updater causes issues too.
And here I thought I was the only person in the world not using Java. Nice to know others feel the same way.
I don't run the updater or any monitor that sits in the tray. I use Chromium with all plugins disabled. If I want to watch a vid or listen to a music sample I right click on the grayed out square and select Run This Plugin. Works fairly well. Now and then there's a brain-dead web site that stalls due to the delay enabling the plugin. For those I load Firefox. :)
