Looking for free cd/dvd burner software

I'm looking for free (hopefully) CD/DVD burning software that will handle writing to multiple discs when the data is larger4 than will fit on a single disc.

ImgBurn, FreeBurner and Nero Burnlite 10 all do not handle this.

I'll buy a package if I have to but would like free if at all possible.

Shot in the dark, but can you use WinRAR for your project? It will take all the files and put them in RARs and automatically split it into different sized RAR files. You can specify the size of your disc.

7zip does the same thing of breaking one file into multiples of specific size limits with a bit better compression than WinRar (and isn't restricted to Windows only).

Thanks, but no. I don't want to compress them. It's primarily pictures (jpg) and movies (avi), about 50GB. I know with Roxio I can just select the entire My Pictures folder and it will fill as many DVDs as needed. If necessary I'll buy Roxio for the shop but it's a non-profit (church thrift store) so I prefer to spend as little of our money as possible.

You might find Ashampoo Burning Studio may do it. If you have to sign up with Ashampoo, you will get many emails from them :) But also watch the installer, and uncheck the choices:

Reasons why this program is marked as ad-supported:

    · Offers to change the homepage for web browsers installed in the system
    · Offers to change the default search engine for web browsers installed in the system
    · Offers to download or install software or components (MyAshampoo Toolbar) that the program does not require to fully function
Download Ashampoo Burning Studio 2010 Advanced FREE 9.24 Free - Choose your files. Burn your disc. Finished! - Softpedia

I'm not sure why you are averse to compressing the data especially since it seems to fulfill both of your requirements of zero cost and ability to split files. 7-zip and cdburnerxp can do exactly what you need at no cost.

CDBurnerXP: KB15: How to burn extremely large files

You could also just split the files yourself at no cost but a couple minutes to add or delete a few files to each disc as needed.

I don't want to compress them because the people who will be using the DVDs are not very computer literate. They will want to be able to put a DVD in and just double click on a picture or movie to look at it, not understand how to decompress it to the hard drive first.

Downloaded the 15 day trial of Nero Burning ROM and it works great. Spans multiple DVDs. I think I'll buy it if it's reasonable as we need a good burner program here.

I use Burnaware- Free (and you can also download the Beta, it's a Bin-file). I'm happy with it, because I can also easy burn 'Dubble layer disc'.

I don't believe in any program of Nero. I stopped with them two months ago, their service is terrible because in the eye of Nero is any client of them a terrorist or something like that.... If a Nero-client tells the truth about the working of their software, or you bought a Nero-software product 14 months ago and together with other Nero-software your bought-version will not working anymore.... the service-support can't help you.

About two months ago Nero came with his Lite version of Nero 10, later they got a Kwik Media in two versions and every Nero-client got an invitation to test the new Nero-10 products.
I had that time on my Windows 7 Pro/x64 a working Nero 8 and Nero Mediahome 4 (a server) and I bought the 2th dvd about Media Suite 10 for €5.00 (NIERLE MEDIA Webshop | Rohlinge (CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R etc.), Speicherkarten, CD-/DVD-Hüllen, USB-Zubehör uvm. or .de), the Nero-support did not tell about installingproblems together with another versions with the Nero 10 Suite or the Kwik Media.

When tested the Kwik Media and the Lite version, I tried to uninstall all because for me it was more a half program from that and a half from that, but it was not possible to delete.
Everytime the error pop-up tells there is a newer version on the machine so you cannot install an older version and Nero only said you have to buy the newest version..... the same working-method as Microsoft with Windows 7 x64!!!! Are that the new companies of the 21 century, which have a 'privacy police' as a full lie.... It's better not to buy any software and take a 'open source' (freeware), because I don't want to work together with software-producers which are realy spies. Sping togethet with their Secet Services, but their 'privacy polices' are the same!!!! Only Google changed their 'privacy police' because of the goverment-contract with the FBI, CIA, USSS, e.s.o. We live in a very hard world without love and emotions.

First the Nero-support told me that Nero 8 wasn't possible on Windows 7/x64, but I had used it on my i7@920 x64 for almost two years. The Nero company said to me you have to buy Nero 10 (the other two dvd).... sorry they where going to far for me. For me no Nero, never again.
