Do I really need Java?

Do I really need this program on my computer I was monitoring it's cpu usage and it's a killer. Does anything really need it anymore? It's just always come off as a buggy program to me, just the name irks me if a weird way. Haha.

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-Bit

Many web pages use Java to enhance interaction with the user, so I'd suggest you don't delete it.

It is also used to give mobile phones and such like extra functionality.

What is the use of java?

If you use Firefox, I have a pretty good solution.
Few websites need Java to work properly, however, there are some that still depend on it.

How about a button that would turn it on/off with a click? Or how about Silverlight? And control over other plug-ins as well?
The QuickJava extension is your answer and you can get it here:

Hope this helps,

I removed Java from my system over 6 Months ago and only ran into two sites that need it, but I didn't need those sites so no big deal. You could remove Java and see how it works for you. Its very easy to install if you find you need it.

This isn't a question you should ask's a question you should ask yourself. You know, from your browsing habits, if you need it or not. When I rebuild my system, I don't install it...until I need it. Then I disable the auto-updater from running, and it causes me no issues.

I removed Java from all my machines 3 weeks ago after a security issue and I haven't come across a site that needs it yet. Good riddance in my opinion.

I have been javaless for almost 2yrs, and have only run into a couple of websites that I couldn't use. They are the Intel auto driver scan on Intel's site, and also Secunia's scan on their site. Other then that, I have not had any other issues.
