    No PDF Thumbnail Preview

    Hi.

I'm running on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and have Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended installed.

Everything is updated but thumbnail preview for PDF files in Windows Explorer is not working.

Someone please give me some advise how I can get the thumbnail preview working like it should.

    Thanks in advance,

    Hello tommygun

Have a look here - Fixes for 64-bit Adobe Reader preview handler and thumbnails download and run the installer .zip from half way down the page and reboot.

You may also have to clear your thumbnail cache after applying the fix - Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset

....... thanks for your reply xxxdannyxxx.

I tried this fix but it's not working a 100% in fact it did nothing in my case because the registry modification wasn't necessary because I had the correct entry in the registry already.

In order to have thumbnail preview I had to save the PDF file again or only wait until the thumbnail image came up inside Acrobat while saving the file and then refresh the content inside Windows Explorer (very time consuming if you got a lot of PDF files in differetnt locations).

But still if I create a new PDF file like saving a Word document as PDF the saved file won't show a thumbnail, it needs the same procedure like mentioned above to do so.

This is a known issue for a long time now and I thought that there is a solution to it by now.

In case you or someone else got another idea, please let me know.

    Thanks again,

    RE: PDF Thumnails

    Tommy -

Hey there! Thumbnails and Windows Seven together is the new "F" Word in today's world. Believe me, I understand the pain in the ass frustration with this particular issue.

SO...I have two ideas that I think (hope) will solve your problem.

    1. Consider installing a third party pdf viewer that generates pdf thumbs in explorer all on it's own. I use a freeware version of a program called PDF-Xchange Viewer that does this and I don't even need acrobat installed for it to work. It creates settings in explorer's shell extensions so you don't even have to run the program - ever! You can keep using acrobat if you wish. Download Home page

    2. The other idea is to install Sage Thumbs which is a program that also generates thumbnails in explorer all on it's own. It offers to make thumbs for about a zillion file types and pdf is one of them. (Also works great for psd file types in windows seven) Download Softpedia

Anyway I have both on my 64 bit system and they work perfectlly ( and the damn things are free )

Just thought I'd pass along the info - I wish you luck!

Very strange, worked instantly for me using the installer version from the .zip.

....... probably there is a difference between Acrobat Reader (free edition) and Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended.

I made this clear when I started this post.

Anyway, I'm not a 100% satisfied with this Windows 7 x64 OS, I waited for a long time to switch from x86 to x64 and probably I was expecting too much when I did but after I finally switched I figured out that a lot of programs are not up to the x64 standards as yet.

Hopefully this will change in the very near future .......

    @tagen

    Thanks for your advise.

The only thing that worked was installing the PDF-Xchange Viewer with every option unchecked except for the Shell Extensions, Sage Thumbs didn't do the trick - don't know why .

It's unbelievable that Adobe can't get this right because it's an Adobe issue nothing else.

Anyway, thanks again for your feedback - thumbnails are back.

For windows 7, the PDF Peview tool worked fine for me. It shows preview in explorer, Office and outlook as well. Just google for it and you will find it.
