General consensus here:
CCleaner is the best if you INSIST you are going to use a cleaner.
But it isn't recommended, no.
IMO, registry cleaners are dangerous in the hands of a novice. They aren't needed in Windows 7, but if you feel you must, CCleaner is going to be your best bet ... Just remember to back up your registry before using any registry cleaner!
I agree with Tews (of course) No registry cleaner is absolutely safe.
I've always been against using them. Although lately I have started using Ccleaners, but I always go through and look at everything that "needs fixing," I always find a few entries that I don't want removed, and I always make a backup.
No it isn't!
Current accepted wisdom with Win 7 is to NOT use a cleaner at all.
If you ever think your Registry needs to be cleaned, repaired, boosted, tuned-up, cured, tweaked, fixed, or optimized it shouldn't.
Note - IMO - there is no reliable way for a third party program to know whether any particular key is invalid, redundant or neither.
Some registry cleaners may not know for sure whether a key is still being used by Windows or what detrimental effects removing it may have.
This has led to examples of registry cleaners causing loss of functionality and/or system instability.
Registry cleaners defintely vary from brand to brand. But in the end result the skill of the user determines how safe they are.
Yeah, and how can any of use know with 100% certainty what to do?
You have a 1 in x chance of making an error due to lack of skill.
And you have a 1 in y chance of any perceptible benefit.
As far as I know, x is nearly always smaller than y---the risks exceed the benefits.
But I'm as big a fool as any of you--I occasionally can't restrain myself and insist on some registry cleaning.
No, I've never noticed any benefit from doing so.
But it gives me the reassuring feeling that I am in charge of things and "maintaining my computer". It's a useful fiction that I like to keep around.
All is vanity.

I am with you. Explains it all. Just can't help myself.
